so far it's great. I have been carrying a beretta 9 but it was just too large and unpractical - now it will stay in the truck. I carried the S&W all over today, just put it in the front of my pants. When I got home, I shot off 10 rounds. It has a hell of a pop compared to the Beretta but over all I love it. I got it for $530 at Cabellas and with the mail offer it is a steal, especially for a brand like S&W.

              (I should add I have a ccw permit )

The Glock is probably the best handgun ever invented. No matter how bad you treat it, or how little you clean it, it will always work. Not to mention it only contains 20 some odd parts, so it's easy to break down, clean and repair.

I guess you could always go with an H&K, if you really feel like spending 300 or 400 more dollars for a gun that's complicated as fuck.

Thats a ridiculous statement. I carry a 9mm, when I carry, and I have never once felt like it wasn't good enough to protect myself. Stopping power arguments are flat out dumb. I would carry a .22 and still feel like I can protect myself.

The best advice for anyone who wants to carry a gun is to carry a caliber that you can effectively control and be accurate with. If the recoil from a .45 or a .40 is too much to effectively control more than 1 shot, then don't carry it. A bullet is a bullet and what matters more than size, is where you put it.

                                            few things to remember...

personally I would not carry a gun who's cal did not start with a 4..

myself I carry all 40 cal for one reason... when I buy ammo I can fill all my handguns....

the bottom line is this... Personally I am just a deadly with a 25 as a 45.. due to shot placement... there is a difference between lethal shots and "stopping power"... you want stopping power as a civilian... you will serve serious jail time if you say these words after shooting someone... "I shot to kill" you need to shoot to "stop the threat" thats all...

when I First started giving classes years ago for ccw's we had a rule of thumb to double tap no matter the gun you were using... now we teach to shoot till the threat is gone... in other words... if your in a situation and you made that choice to draw and brandish your weapon then you need to make calculated trigger pulls until that threat is no longer a threat... that could mean one shot could be 10....

I have issued over 500 ccw's here in Las Vegas... and I would personally never reccomend anything smaller than a 40... a 9mm will not stop a human being on the first shot....

now on to your sw mp.. great gun.. the MP is considered one of the cheaper handguns on the market that is a half way decent gun... I would carry one myself if my HK and XD were taken away... other than that I stick to HK mostly and XD for backup...

now I have another question and it;s just me busting your balls....

what state are you in. how did you get your gun and carry CCW the same day? in all states I am certified to give ccw in you have to qualify with your weapon then go add it to the ccw which can take about a week then to get that gun added to your ccw...

in nevada you can only carry ccw the guns you have listed on your ccw card... I have 2 cards because they could not fit all my handguns on one card LOL...

just busting your balls I don't care if you carry ccw personally im all for it.. permit or not.. if you know how to use it carry it if you ask me.... might make little jackass 19 year old mall shooters think twice....
                                            Danza Bucks is back!!!

I guess you could always go with an H&K, if you really feel like spending 300 or 400 more dollars for a gun that's complicated as fuck.

The best advice for anyone who wants to carry a gun is to carry a caliber that you can effectively control and be accurate with. If the recoil from a .45 or a .40 is too much to effectively control more than 1 shot, then don't carry it. A bullet is a bullet and what matters more than size, is where you put it.

if you can't be accurate with a 40, 45 or a 9 then you do not need to shoot or own a gun...

here in nevada to pass the ccw test you have to take 30 rds and put 23 of those 30 through the 8 ring of a siloute target... I fail you if you miss one... were talking 7 yds 21 ft....

a 9mm will not stop a human being that is intent on killing you it just won't... thats why you got 17 rd clips with em...

I can show you stat after stat that will show the highest 9mm one shot stop rate at 84% alomost 10% less than the worst 40 cal....

Well, I'm a certified Glock Armorer, I was a firearms instructor for 5 years and a master class shooter in steel matches and an A class shooter in IDPA. I did that all with a Glock, which by the way I didn't clean for all the steel matches. Never jammed once.

So, I do have some experience in this field. The fact that you all seem to think that unless it's a big boy gun it's garbage shows you are exactly the kind of people that would make my day when they walked into the shop I worked at. You are the guy the buys whatever the gun magazine says is the best gun to buy, get the big caliber to make you feel warmer at night and all the gear that was pictured with it in the magazine. I could just hear the commission check getting bigger.

The fact is that there is no right and wrong when it comes to self defense, you do what works for you. If you can't comfortably double tap a .40 or a .45, then you shouldn't carry one. Same if you can't comfortably double tap a 9 mil., you shouldn't carry one. .22's are just as deadly as any other round on the market, in fact .22 kill a ton of people every year. Saying that you might as well carry nothing instead of a .22 is just ignorant.

Ya, Nevada is little more restrictive than other states. AZ just recently changed their policy and the shooting test isn't required anymore. I don't agree with that and most reputable establishments putting on the course still require they shoot.

I think it should be an involved process of educating people on all aspects of self defense before the permit is issued. There's a lot more to carrying a gun than shooting at a piece of paper in a controlled environment and getting 8 hours of instruction.

I'm surprised how the fuck you guys can carry that stuff comfortably without a shoulder holster. I tried carrying my Ruger 9mm and it was a nightmare to conceal. I finally settled on a Keltec .380. It's small and fits in my pocket, you hardly know it's there. Yes it's a fucking plastic gun but it works. For those who say there's no stopping power, bullshit. Put one between the eyes and problem solved.

I too once owned a glock 23 and myself never had any issues with it.... shot fine... I have personally seen many glocks explode.

as far as jamming I am one of those instructors that will always blame jams on shooting limp wristed which if you instructed you know 99% of jams are caused by shooting limp wristed. or using re load ammo....
Glock is still shit though... and it's not hard to get a glock cert.. I have one to... my friend owns glockmeister.com we go back and forth all the time..

like you said the bottom line at the end of the day is what do you feel good with.... I know a girl that loves nothing more than a 357sig in her purse with a fuckiing 6 inch barrel on it... bit over kill if you ask me but if thats what she is most comfy with thats what will work... and yeah a 22 will work... so will a stone.... but a bomb works better gets the job done quicker.... we can go back and forth all day long on this.. were both instructors we both have different views because we were both trained different... I don't know your training personally but I know mine and what ive seen different ammo do in real world situations... I know personally I would not carry something smaller than a 40 to stop a grown human being... now I said stop... just cause you swiss cheese someone with a 22 and they die later in the hospital does not mean it did it's job... you need a round with stopping power..

if you think that all rounds are the same then why did the FBI in 1986 after a little shoot out in florida go to the 40?

this is the FBI were talking about.. they have all the money int he world for testing right?

then read about the strausburg goat test... bottom line is shot placement can play a vital role in all gun fights but ammo will also play a bigger roll than shot placement...

                                                                  I mean think about it...

if your an instructor im assuming your nra certified at at least marksman maybe like me with distinguished expert so in our hands a 22 will be deadly... maybe even first shot if I can sight that little triangle in the forehead.. but to the avg citizen that only shoots maybe once a year... they need stopping power... yes a 22 is better than nothing but also.. be a shitty day to get your 22 taken from you after you just unloaded a mag into the bad guy then he beats you with your own gun....

my wife was the same way... she wanted to carry this 380 I got.. I said NO you will carry the 40 or nothing... now she shoots the 40 both left and right handed with a 94%....

don't have to list guns or anything on it.

AZ just recently changed their policy and the shooting test isn't required anymore. I don't agree with that and most reputable establishments putting on the course still require they shoot.

I think it should be an involved process of educating people on all aspects of self defense before the permit is issued. There's a lot more to carrying a gun than shooting at a piece of paper in a controlled environment and getting 8 hours of instruction.
yeah we require you to shoot every weapon you want to list on your ccw... I know some states will let you shoot one gun then list em all... so people take in a 22 or 38 then pass wth that then list every 44 mag they own....

It's true that the bigger the round, the higher likelyhood of a one shot stop will occur, but my main point is that if that larger round isn't confortable for an individual to accurately fire in a somewhat rapid succession, they shouldn't be carrying it. Personally, I don't care for the .40 round. I carry a 9mm but I also have a Kimber with I used for competitions.

I haven't shot in a match in a while though, new job doesn't allow for me to get out to Usery or south mountain in time, but I'm hoping to change that shortly and get back into it. Great practice for more realistic situations than shooting a paper.

Great practice for more realistic situations than shooting a paper.

yeah off subject and not to keep the argument going but I was very dishearted to see the HK blow up the way it did... if your talking the same one I am.. the usp 45 right?
here is my question to that guy.... because im sure there is more but ive only read about one case with HK. but why buy a 1500 dollar gun then put re loads through it? never made sense to me... I have a grandfather thats that way... he has a special edition 1911 and uses re loads the cheap bastard...

like I was taught and like I teach mine... practice with the ammo you carry or your doing no good... I can feel the difference between the 185grn flat nose winchester rounds or the rounds I carry the 155grn hydra shok.. it has the best one shot stop out of all the 40 rds out... only in the 155 grn... there is a cor-bon 135 grn 40 cal thats a +p+ ive shot it a few times I did not like the round itself... I like a 155grn in the 40... easy to shoot with slight pop back into front sight posotion... the 45 just rolls to much for me... like I said my partner is all about the 45 I just can't get jiggy with it.... I stick with the 40 for the stopping power...
                                                                                    Danza Bucks is back!!!

I don;t care what you carry... it can be a super soaker for all I care.. if it looks like a gun and it's pointed near me... I go in to survival mode with my shots... cause personally I don't wanna be shot with a BB gun... much less a 40 or something bigger.... I get hit with paintballs on a weekly basis thats enough for me... keeps my adrenalin up and situational awareness at it's tops... for the day that I am un lucky enough to be in a real world situation you want everything a reaction rather than an action...

here is my question to that guy.... because im sure there is more but ive only read about one case with HK. but why buy a 1500 dollar gun then put re loads through it? never made sense to me...

I agree and disagree with that. Obviously, it's best to practice with the ammo that you carry, but to practice with defense loads on a regular basis would cost a fortune. I would say that practicing with the same load as what you carry is a definite benifit though, and that's what I would recommend to my students.

I usually change up my carry ammo and rotate magazines about every 6 months or so, so I fire it off and replace it then. I carry 124gr Golden Sabers, but typically I practice with 115gr ammo. The difference is noticable, but doesn't really affect my accuracy.

I know the H&K you are talking about that split right down the grip. What I was talking about was actually the .40 that the range I worked for rented. It did the exact same thing, which actually gives me confidence in the gun. Blow ups happen and it's good to see that when they do, they do as the manufacturer intended by disapating all the energy out the bottom of the grip and away from you face.

I see their point as it would have been nice to have a safety but I haven't shot myself in the foot yet (knocking on wood).
