    how many links do you think it will take to get #1 for semi-competitive term?

    Say each incoming the same linking power, how many links do you think it will take to control #1 on google?

    For the sake of this example, we'll use the term "fish bowls", has 365,000 pages (broad) on google.

    With the content unique and good SE friendly site strucutre.

    I'm trying to figure out how many sites I'll need to make to build linking power for one of my sites.

      a site can have PR0 and get listed in that first result, if it is relevant enough to the query.

      in your example, "fish bowls" the domain in spot #1 has 17,500 inbound links, is aged 3 years, and has seen frequent updates

      spot #2 has higher pr (5), more links (74,500), has some blog exposure, BUT is 2 years younger.

      there are also some details that I did not bother to compare, such as keyword density and the relevance of the links coming in, etc.

          well, I have a #2 listing with a term that shows "116.000" pages on google and I have not more than 10 links on other pages

                                  Depends. I have a few dating sites affiliate with world datings partners and three of them are ranking within top 5 for many keywords (without any link building, expect for a few blog posts). You need to find the right keywords, that's all.

                                      yah. I know u can have PR0 and rank well, but for a mid-competitive term, I think you need a good 30-40 links to stay up there consistently (granted everything else is optimized)

                                                  Sometimes people make the mistake of targetting the one word or keyword phrase and dont realise they can still help their efforts by targetting other words with they main one and get the benefit that way.

                                                  Longtail keywords help, most peoples searches are naturally longer than one or two words.
