If it is a male cate and not castrated, then you should not be surprised. They go away for long periods of time, and usually come back so fucked up (wounded) that you wouldn't recognize him.

if u had your cat for 10years.... u know cat´s when they know they are sick or too old, they go die away from you, cause they don´t want to see you him die.... so probably (I am sure) that was the reason...

I had a cat myself, same situation... but I understand them... and I will always rather a clean cat than a nasty dog...
