I use it. I get some weird looks from people when I use it too. I guess it's not a commonly used word...you know, those words that you don't really need to use your brain to know what they mean.
I use it often, I actually said it out loud to someone yesterday...
Does the average American know the meaning? I mean, im not trying to be funny here or something but as i never heard someone say it before it wouldnt surprise me if not everyone knows the word.
Because it's a lame ass word. And I'm sure a healthy majority of American's know what the word means, it's not like it's some kind of secret freaky deaky Dutch word.
by the way, it's funny that you mention it... I've kind of had a kids song stuck in my head that says ".... don't you worry, don't you fret, we will make it to the party..."
ha!

no, its not common at all and I have had people ask me what it means...
I pride myself in my vocabulary language...
although im a doofus on ocassion i know and use lengthy or original words rather than bastardized american...
In school i wasnt a bad kid but I was a heathen at times...during the 6th grade I had a meeting ... teacher and mother... I wasnt there actually... but ... needless to say I was a handful and my mother was called in... nothing drastic... I was never kicked out of school or even expelled... I dont even think suspended... but ... more of a class clown...
anyway
all my mother remembers from the meeting is the teacher telling her that I had a higher vocabulary language than she did and I used it... and it intimidated her...
that was the early stages of me reading and learning lots of words...
