    CANADA - Roger's testing ad hijacking on their internet service

    It's bad enough that the Canadian cellular companies charge Canadians mobile data rates that are up to 300 times as expensive as available in the U.S. (one of the reasons that iPhone is not available in Canada yet)

    Now, Rogers home internet service wants to pop over their own advertising or messages onto third party websites.

          You should re-read that article, has nothing to do with ad highjacking.

          Toronto-based Rogers confirmed yesterday that it has spent the past few weeks testing a new technology that allows it to post Web-based notices to its Internet subscribers when they are approaching their monthly data limits.

          The messages carry Rogers' name and logo and appear in the body of Web pages in place of original content, not as a pop-up window. One such notice, posted online, showed the Rogers content occupying the top third of Google's normally sparse search page.

              i know of a couple 3rd tier isp who do something similar at the dns level
              they simple pick a major ad broker and change the domain to point to a local/ on net server
              using a similar software package they actually serve up ads on sites

                  fucking scumbags - they are up to no fucking good - EMAIL is the way to alert people about their bandwidth usage.

                              Abstract:
                              A network device for monitoring and modifying data traffic between a client device and a server device is disclosed. The network device is configured to provide targeted advertisements to a user based on some or all of the data traffics generated the user. Different from a proxy server, the network device operates transparently from both perspectives of a computer being used by the user and a website being visited by the user. The network device is disposed in line between the computer and the network so that all data traffics are examined. The data packets exchanged between a computer and a website being visited are altered or modified in such a way that the head of the packets remains largely intact while the payloads of the packets are changed to suit the need of delivering transparently the targeted commercial information.
