I am going to be in LA this weekend and I am bringing my cam because my hotel has a roof terrace with a view of the hills, I will post my results

Yeah, HDR can be a lot of fun to play with when you have some extreme difference in light to deal with in a single shot.
I have no examples as good as that one, but I do have fun fiddling

It's actually what you ARE seeing

Very rarely can a single shot capture all the nuances that the human eye can see. The reflection in the windows, the wood grain on the ceiling etc. Normally in order to focus and properly light one subject. the background items tend to be too dark or too bright. This method takes 3 shots at various exposures and pulls the most detail from each shot to make the hybrid.

Make sense?

I am reading up on this right now, thanks. But 3 shots at various exposures with the dog exactly the same? Forgive my ignorance.

You only take elements from each pic that you want to have... so in this case, the section with lots of shadow was melded into the pic with lots of light (which has the dog in it).

You can pick and choose which sections to leave intact from which of the 3 pictures. So it's very likely that the dog was only used from one of the 3.
