CDNs usually charge ~$0.5-$1/GB of transfer which is 5x more expensive than your average adult hosting co.

no... tons MORE hardware...
You have to have matching hardware, in EACH location serving matching content.
If you are using premium bandwidth you can expect to see costs higher than $1/GB. If you use a CDN that uses the lowest bunch of carriers, which most do! (limelight, cogent, he.net), then you can see ~$.50/GB+ on big commits with the CDN company.
