Thanks to domestic violence laws that's rapidly becoming a lost art.

I'm rather more inclined to think that beating a rape victim, quite possibly to death, is a tad more "sucky" than criticizing those who would do so on an internet message board.

Then again I'm no foreign affairs expert like Kick Ass Vic here, so what do I know.

The reason women are required to dress the way they do is so men will view them for who they are and not as sex objects. (in a strange way it makes sense)

Women aren't allowed in public alone and not allowed in the presence of other males without a male relative. (now when a woman is raped while alone in a car with other men the "I told you so" mentality kicks in and the prevailing religious law's are enforced)
I disagree with some of what you say here. Women are not dressing like they do because their culture doesn't want them looked upon as sex objects (well maybe that is a small part of it) moreover it is because women in that part of the world are often treated as property. A family dog in America has more rights than many women in the middle east. She is not allowed to have her own dignity or personality outside that of her husband and this burka ensures that nobody can see her as anything but the property of whomever she is married to.

Many women are forbidden to travel alone for much the same reason. There are some parts of the middle east that are so dangerous to women that they can't risk being without a male or they could be killed or raped, but most of the time it is to show everyone that she is "kept". I went to Egypt a while back and while Cairo is a pretty modern city we went further south where there are many places women are not even aloud. One night we had to sit at a table outside because women were not aloud in the building. Our tour guide (also a woman) told the women in our group to always make sure they had a guy with them and that it was best if they walked a step or so behind them to show that the guy was in charge. We teased the girls in our tour group about it when we were alone, but it was kind of freaky knowing that people might throw rocks at them because they were wearing shorts, or short sleeve shirts or walking alongside us, not behind us.

you don't live in the US or Europe so you just can't understand. We can't judge others. we have to be politically correct at all times to avoid hurting anyones feelings. we have to respect everyone, thier cultures and their religion.

do they judge us? do they want us all dead because we don't see the world through their eyes? well sure they do but thats a part of what makes their culture unique. we should respect that and not judge them for judging us

And ... in other news today, a kids baseball team named after Hogs (can't remember, don't care) was forced to change the name of their mascott from "Pork Chop" to something else because hispanic people were offended by it.

yeah, its happened countless times. people here don't mind starting wars in other countries, they just don't tolerate anyone being called "fat" or "retard" at home.

I'm sure there are many of these people who wear the clothes as a show of modesty and because of their religions (and if that is what they want so be it), but I would argue that they are treated equally. There are some countries there like Qatar that are now giving women the right to vote and get educations and run for political office, but many of the more hardcore countries over there still don't. Egypt is a fairly modern country as far as the Muslim religion goes, yet I saw myself how people would not want to do business with women and not let them in shops, stores and restaurants simply because they were women. There are women killed every day in that part of the world simply for "shaming" their families by wanting to date someone outside their religion. there are women beaten daily just for questioning their men.

Sure, there is some equality in some areas of that part of the world, but in much of it, there is nothing even closely resembling it.

The high school I went to was called the Indians. it was named after the tribe of Indians that were from that area. The Indians themselves (what are left of them) actually took it as a compliment and spoke about how it made them proud. This year someone on the school board brought up that they should change it because it is offensive to Indians. They are actually working out the budget to see what it would cost and might do it. It's crazy.

Sorry but you are very far from base. Women are not treated as objects, but as equally as men are. L-Pink hit the spot. Women can only be treated equally to men if they are not seen as sex objects, but for who they actually are.

I've been to Iran and Saudi Arabia (among other places around the world) from when I used to work for a Tourism company. It's about modesty. If that's how they want to live, then let them live like that it's up to them.
Here is a nice little article about how middle eastern women are treated as equals.

"The rape victim was punished for violating Saudi Arabia's laws on segregation that forbid unrelated men and women from associating with each other."

Sounds like these people need some liberation.

So who do they fuck in this kind of situation?
                                            Relatives?

laws are laws whether they're fair or not.

She knew what she was doing was wrong and she knew what could happen to her.

She's not being punished for being raped. Had she not put herself in the situation by following the laws of her land, she wouldnt be in this situation.

So some of you obviously think women should be 2nd class citizens nor have any apathy for those that are treated as 2nd class citizens.

                                                      Either way it's abusive.

The Koran's attitude toward women was the topic I commented on not the modern day country by country practice. BIG difference.

How about citizens of the Congo or Darfur? They're cool with slaughtering innocents, but hell, we have to respect that. Right?

People judge all the time, for all manner of things. It's natural to do so. Some types of judging is obviously wrong, often descriminatory. But to consider a law where a rape victim is herself persecuted and not only given prison time but 200 lashes with a whip... all for doing something that women over here take for granted?

I'm sorry, but people are going to judge or otherwise decide for themselves that that is wrong, period.

But perhaps you completely missed or otherwise skipped over the part of one of my previous posts where I said "But if the people over there choose to live under those conditions rather than make changes or leave then I suppose they can't cry about it." ... at least shows I'm not all for nuking them due to my judgement of their aberrant ways.

They can do what they want, I don't have to like it or agree with it though.

When is the last time you regularly listed to, watched or read the CBC, BBC, or EU news source?

L-Pink hit the spot. Women can only be treated equally to men if they are not seen as sex objects, but for who they actually are.

I've been to Iran and Saudi Arabia (among other places around the world) from when I used to work for a Tourism company. It's about modesty. If that's how they want to live, then let them live like that it's up to them.
I think that is a ridiculous attitude. Do you really think they have any power or enough knowledge (outside of the religion they've been brainwashed with since birth) to know whether that is how they want to live? I find it hilarious that people hammer Christian conservatives so much but the same hippie's think we should respect an even more restrictive culture simply because it is not our own. These are theocratic dictatorships more or less that enforce religion from birth, that restrict anything being taught contradictory to those teachings. Certainly in many parts of the ME women aren't treated too badly, I've been there as well. But the fact is ALOT of women really don't like living essentially in submission to others their entire life - and why would they? But they don't bother challenging it because they realise their effort would be more or less futile.
