They should be selling based on the merits of their own product, not based on the implied shortcomings of others.
It's along the lines of BMW ads versus Ford ads. BMW is "The Ultimate Driving Machine", because their product stands strong on it's own. And Ford is "Have you driven a Ford lately?". It's along the lines of saying "We know everyone thinks we suck... can you come back and give us another try? Please?"

This is a marketing strategy that has been used since day dot and lately more brands are doing a great job of being creative with it. So enjoy it and don't try to read anything into it.
