Flashback! I used to a host a BBQ to raise a little money for cancer research at Foodland (when it existed) at McCowan and Kingston Rd in Scarborough.

My son - in his early teens - was my runner, my "gopher", and he took over cooking duties during the brief moments that I had to be away from the grill. Basically, his job was making sure that shit didn't catch on fire, and grab patties and buns out of the store when we were running out. He LOVED running the grill, though...

So! A Muslim family orders a half-dozen veggie burgers, drops about $100 into the jar (for like four or six veggie burgers - I forget exactly what they bought... but they were very generous), and they go into Foodland to grab a few items. They won't be in there long...

Meanwhile, I ask my son to watch the grill. I go to the CIBC a couple doors down to deposit the money into Foodland's fundraising account (I had to make a deposit for every $100 we earned. Its fucking SCARBOROUGH!) while the veggie burgers are cooking, and I leave my young son in charge of the grill. He loves it!

After depositing the money into Foodland's account, I return and take over the grill. My son proudly tells me that he served the family their burgers, but the veggie patties are still on the grill. He served them the beef/pork blend patties that were donated to us by Foodland.

I felt so, so bad. They don't even know that they're condemned.
