you have to keep in mind we are close to fucked as far as military options are concerned.
in theory you can do all kinds of things militarily, in practice, because of the oil, and the military logistics and strategic disasters of iraq and afghanistan, we are kinda just standing there bent over with our pants down, when it comes to irregular and swarm warfare like this.
the ideal military response would have been immediate and overwhelming local defense - but we failed at that.
now our best bet is to get a return of the mobs so we get a second chance at overwhelming defense. kill a few hundred in what is clearly justifiable self defense.
the mobs WANT us to cut diplomatic ties and funding of the local governments - so the stabdard diplomatic strategies just play into the goals of the local islamist chiefs.
