It's not true to a certain extent. It's an absolute fact. You are confusing things which might influence weight gain or loss, metabolic efficiency, thyroid, energy levels etc etc etc with the very simple fact that you can't gain weight without eating more calories than you burn.
And... oh great. One more "diet" of the many 1000s of diets that all make some claim that they have some benefit or are somehow based on a unique principle,... yet all seem to require you to eat fewer calories than you burn. Imagine that.
