I have a trainer that works for me that's young, has 9% body fat (clearly defined abs). He requires about 5000 calories a day to maintain (no weight loss/no weight gain). I'm at 20% body fat (no abs ) and eat roughly 2100 calories a day to maintain. I track everything I put in my mouth. The flip side is that he can't really gain muscle easily because of his body type and because of that extra energy spent working out, plus additional calories for growth/repair means he has to increase his calories to 6000+ per day to have any real hope of gaining lean muscle. However, if he wants to lose body fat, he simply eats 1 less cheeseburger each day. He can also eat substantially more a few times a week and not have to really worry about it as his body will burn it and his weight will remain the same.

I however, can still eat 2500 calories per day and gain muscle fairly easily. If I want to lose fat, I have to lower my calories to 1900 or so per day, monitor/count every single thing that passes my lips, do 40 minutes plus of cardio 5-6 days a week and be extremely consistent and diligent about it.

Life is not fair, in some respects there is a great deal of individuality as it pertains to each persons physiology... but of all things, one thing remains constant with respect to this conversation... the laws of physics and namely, thermodynamics and how it applies to energy consumption, storage and expenditure in the human body.
