I'll try making up a resume and see how that goes. I wouldn't think that local businesses would pay a single local guy up front that much money for the first job, though, but I can always try and I have some great references.

Dont worry, there is usually one or two people a week asking for money here.
You have to have a success story, or this wont work for you. If you walk in and say "hey, my name is Mike, do you want SEO?" you will get the door shut in your face.
Most companies don't like working with big agencies because they know they will get fucked. Make up a story about how you used to work for them and you know you can do this better on a one-to-one relationship with the clients where they know exactly who is doing all the work.
Also, and probably most important, make sure to have some type of guarantee of service. Meaning... "if I don't do what I say, I will give you my money back, and its on this contract right here so you have nothing to lose." No one will hand you a dollar on a whim.
Make yourself professional and come prepared. Start with some that are out of your league to practice, then you will have more experience going after the smaller companies that you can close.
Good luck
