I cannot speak for anyone else, but in our case, we did not submit your typical TGP gallery. I'm not sure we ever really stopped except for the last couple of months while we rolled out a series of niche specific sites in preparation for the fall. Shemp **was** in our budget for this Fall, so this kind of came as a surprise
Shemp was one of the
very few forward thinking, old school TGP site owners who understood the value in a relationship that went beyond your standard submitter/tgp owner one. He realized the value of working with those of us with solid footholds in search engines and social networks as it ultimately trickled back to him (and others with whom we work).
The value of Shemp's site, at least in our perspective, transcended that of his actual traffic years ago. You just had to think outside the box and be forward thinking, as he was, and is.
One positive that has come from Shemp's thinking was, as mentioned earlier, several old school sites have since realized there is value beyond the partner account renewal. Some are starting to come around, albeit I think the ones who held out, or are continuing to hold out, have missed the boat somewhat.
