    Looking for software to encrypt/rename files... I hate customs/immigration

    I'm flying back to the states tomorrow from mexico and don't want them poking through my external hd in customs. Does anyone know of software that can encrypt, rename, and possibly use random extensions/filenames? I don't need them looking through all my damn work files, galleries, members area videos, etc.

      Possibly an easier solution might be open up the drive and remove a wire inside...
      Customs wanna see ? Sorry, it dont work... Gonna get it fixed when I get home...

      Then, once home, reconnect wire?

              Quick and dirty solution: RAR the files up and put a password on them. Remember the password and delete the original files. Rename the RAR to something obscure and hide it.

              Question: why would customs even bother with your data? I've never had my data searched, and I've traveled with all sorts of hardware in my bag.

                  Fuck, isn't it the worst feeling in the world waiting to clear customs!

                  Have you been red-flagged? Do they know what work you do?

                  I had a customs agent ask me to decrypt files before..
                  Encrypted files raise suspicion, and commerical encryption products are easily defeated.

                  Don't take wires out. Non-functioning eqiupment also raises eyebrows.

                  Make sure everything is legal and hope for the best!

I know with canadian customs that gay porn has been discriminated against even more so and many seizures and refusals at the border have proportionally happened with gay and lesbian publications. Adding in bdsm to the mix puts the odds way up of possible troubles.

                                              what he said - no faster way to get red flagged than going in and out of the country with encrypted files - I believe it actually may be illegal past a certain encryption level.
