I just got an intel core2duo awhile back. Bought all the parts on newegg.com and had someone from Geeksquad put it together.
$1,400 total.

I picked up a a Ahtlon 64 X2 Dual Core 6000+ a month or so ago. so far it has been great. Running vista premium with 4 gigs of ram as well.Comment

get the core2duo. AMD has nothing on Intel as far as bang for the buck at the moment. I'm a 3D animator, so I research speeds carefully before I build a new rig.
I have 3 core2duo quadcores at the moment.

On the surface, the AMD is a "better" and faster processor, but for server use w/ a known 32 bit OS I'm going to have to say to go with the straight P4 3.0 (non HT).Comment

P4's with HT aren't holding any performance crown today... so with the limited choice you said you have; EASILY the AMD, even if it's NOT an X2!
You should go for a new X2 for the best bang-for-the-buck though, 3600+ to 4400+ are cheap and often gives a *stable* overclock of ~20% with *standard core voltage*!

I think a few things... Basically, they're similar in terms of performance. The area where the AMD is going to perform better is tasks that involve memory bandwidth and throughput. You haven't really told us all what you're going to be using this for - as a server, for games... using Windows or Linux. In any of these scenarios I would say that you should choose the AMD over the Intel, probably. I'm a much bigger Intel fan but comparing these two processor types would have me choosing the AMD if everything else was equal component wise and there wasn't an option of going with anything different.

I got the Intel core 2 duo or some shit... Same shit from AMD... Guess what? Neither is THAT much faster unless you are doing video encoding...
In which case you should go with Intel.
And even then.. We are talking like 8% difference in real world apps...Comment
