          I had some friends from norway who were baffled with our hospitals when they had to pay for services. My roomate was also baffled when he had to write a check, he wanted to directly wire the money using some nifty online interface and really thought it was strange he had to sign a funny piece of paper.

          Norway is a very different country because it has so much oil. It also has extremely high taxes for all goods and a high income tax.

                          I am moving. Believe me Canada is no beakon of hope. Being an American in Canada for 5 years, I'd rather be in the states. I had seriously injured my knee a couple years back and was on a waiting list for an MRI for 7 months. In that time my knee healed incorrectly and I feel insane pain when it is cold or damp. My sister-in-law had a similiar injury and had an MRI in 3 days and had surgery a week later. I know this is just one instance, but try going to ANY emergency room in Canada and you will be waiting up to 8 hours to be seen. They are all flooded with deadbeats and people with nothing better to do.

                                              What if you didn't have insurance in the United States ?
                                              You would have had neither and maybe ended up worst.
                                              Canada is not perfect but certainly much better then the United States when it comes to health care.

                                                                  Here is the sick part! The number one issue domestically is our health care system! None of the major news organizations in the United States talk about it or even report it when a presidential canditate talks about it.

                                                                  Health care is a civil right.

                                                                  They should increase taxes on cigarettes, alcohol and gas to pay for universal health care in the US.

                                                                              First of all, all emergency are handle first. Then there is a priority list of health risk that takes order. I guy who need a MRI for his knee may be bumped off because a guy has a clogged artery and needs surgery.


                                                                              I rather have a fucked up knee then to be dead.

                                                                              In the US, even with insurance you are not guarantee coverage. Especially if you have an HMO.

                                                                                          They must at the very least stabilize you, then send you onto a state / city funded hospital.

                                                                                          So a heart attack victim would get emergency care immediately.

                                                                                          The problem here in America is when it comes to preventative medicine.

                                                                                          If you have insurance they won't cover a lot of things that will keep you from getting serious illnesses in the future, and if you're without insurance, then you aren't seeing a physician regularly to catch something serious early on.

                                                                                          I recall one time walking into a doctor's office and it had a letter posted that Medicaid would no longer cover pap smears for women.

                                                                                          A simple pap smear may prevent tax payers from having to pay for treatment of cervical cancer later on in life.

                                                                                          Oh well it's not going to change any time soon. I'm a firm believer in capitalism, however when it means that companies no longer cure you, but only provide medicines to help you live with your illnesses, then I think we've crossed lines.

                                                                                                      I am really sorry for your knee, but after i watched Sicko I was happy to live in Canada. Yes we have long wait at the ER, but i guess its our price to pay... And trust me, I am not rich and I prefer to wait 8h than be bankruped or something like that...

                                                                                                          The problem that I see is that you go into an emergency room as you say and they treat you but what about if you need bypass surgery afterwards. Would that be covered as it's not emergency issue.
                                                                                                          Second even if they treat you in an emergency and you don't have insurance, you get home alive and well only to find a huge bill not knowing how you will pay it. That is the very real and very scary part.

                                                                                                                      Insurance would cover the bypass surgery. Insurance isn't the big problem, it's those who don't have it or can't get it. Some are too poor to afford it while others have pre-existing conditions that get them denied by every health care company.

I believe a report on this just came out last week. We have something close to 1/4 of the world's total.

I am not sure how many are aware of that and police will never ?arrest? you but it is still illegal.

Prisons should try and rehabilitate the prisoner so that he or she doesn?t commit the same crime again. But I am sure most Americans could never understand that concept

                                                                                                                                                          We have an NHS that has problems but on the whole works and will treat everyone free though you might have to wait.
                                                                                                                                                          If you have money or health insurance you can jump the queue and get treated sooner going private.

                                                                                                                                                          So I think its the best of both systems I think and works pretty good. Having it 100% private system bike in the US is scary and people get left out.
                                                                                                                                                          I wouldn't trust my life to an insurance company!

Im seeing with my dads fight with cancer. If my mother wasnt connected the way she is, he would be so behind in his treatments. My wife needed to see a endocrinologist, it was feb she didnt get to see the actual doctor til august.At least if its covered in my taxes it doesnt sting as much as having to pay for the coverage yourself and the service sucks.

He was seen on a Friday - went to surgery and then we went back to see the surgeon on Sat.

                                                                                                                                                                                                      The whole operation including medication came out to $200 dollars USD - This was for someone with no insurance in France.
