IMHO Samsung has just slam dunked themselves into being the "competitor" to apple
if they can wriggle out of the copycat thing and make themselves look like the aggreived party they have just pawnd HTC. Nokia, rim et al. for less than a billion. Every single product release they do from here on in will be plastered all over the press as a response to apple and analysed in depth. massive PR. It's like the Virgin vs BA PR stunt or the ben and jerry ice cream. classic minnow vs whale (except they aint no minnow)
You can bet there are now millions of punters who now see Samsung phones as direct alternatives to the apple phone, but cheaper and so now cooler. Nokia, RIM and HTC are now relegated to the third division with windows working out how to get in between the two.
Samsung has a revenue of 150 Billion, so providing they can control the backfire they could win. Their PR is in full overdrive making look like the bully apple is stopping them make rectangular phones with rounded corners and they have reached more users now because of this and their upcoming appeal than they could have hoped for.
