I read more about the case and thinking about it, Apple deserves the money, but that's the end of the story. They shouldn't be allowed to exclusively 'own' the UI crap they were given patents to.

Here's what a judge or jury should have to ask themselves in cases like this - is it reasonable to assume that whatever is patented would have been developed by somebody else in a reasonable amount of time - pick how long that time frame is.

Patents should be given out to only truly unique innovations that are far ahead of their time, where it's not reasonable to believe that the innovation would have been developed by anybody else other than the patent applicant.
