Not everyone on the internet likes social networking sites. I am not nor have I ever been a member of myspace or facebook. I don't intend to join...ever. Online dating sites may lose some market share but there will always be a place for them.

Social networking sites are basicly online dating sites, some with more and better features... but free.

Slowly the users are moving away from the Web 1.0 sites, and going on the new free dating platforms.

There's a reason Mulligan and Helm are above online dating. They're part of the social networking generation. Neither would admit to going on sites like Facebook or News Corp.'s MySpace (NWS) expressly looking to hook up. And that's precisely why it's such a better answer to the problem of meeting someone interesting. It's like going to a bar with your friends. Maybe you are going to meet someone special, but maybe you're just going to hang out with your friends too. You can play it cool. "MySpace and Facebook feel like going to a nature preserve, [whereas] a dating site is like walking past a bunch of animals in cages at the zoo," Helm says.

interesting observation and probably true for most

Not anymore, but yes, I have tried them. I have a perpetual membership to a couple of sites. Granted, I have never had to pay for a membership to a dating site. Most programs will give out memberships to affiliates. If I had to pay for a membership my attitude might be different.

Pretty sure the entire scenario would be different if no one had to pay for them.

I see where this article is coming from, but I disagree.

The target audience on myspace is younger than for most paid dating sites. I'm sure match and yahoo personals probably took more than a few licks from free social networking communities, but I think for companies like eharmony I'm gonna guess the main card swipers are in their late 20's to early 40's.

If I'm hunting strictly for the opposite sex, I'd rather go to a dating site because:

                                  1. All of the people on that site are there specifically to hook up.
                                  2. You get a higher response/inquiry ratio with a dating site.
                                  3. As a man, you have less competition for the ladies with paid subscriptions.

Why go to myspace and compete with young well muscled studs when I can go on a dating site tailored for what I like, pay a fee, and pick from a multitude of prequalified and willing women?

                                      Bingo.

My only beef with meeting girls on dating sites is that they frequently grossly misrepresent themselves. They will post pictures of themselves from 10 years ago...or even post a picture of someone else. I mean, surely they have to know that the guy will notice when/if he actually meets her.

nah.... communities are also for friends and shit. Online date sites are purely for dating, people looking for sex knowing exactly that the other members are there for that too. Paying for online dating will also keep on existing, because then you know the members are serious and not just fucking around, plus a paid service is a better 'shield' for the personal (sexual preferences, fetishes etc.) information of the members.

"ComScore does show some names like Plentyoffish.com growing, but these are new sites with far smaller user bases. Many of them go at online dating in a new way. Plentyoffish, for example, allows you to browse profiles for free. I doubt they'll ever get to the size or valuation of a Match.com. The Web and the way people use it have just changed too much since then."

Is this person a fucking moron? PlentyofFish is the #1 dating site in Canada, and #2 in the US and UK.

                                                Great link, PW. Bookmarked.

                                                My comment on the article:

The author seems to be neglecting the huge demographic scale involved in online dating. Also seems to neglect the power of niche matching.

Sure, Web 2.0 sites are where some people hook up. They are also fertile grounds for filtering people to upsell them to...... guess what........ niche dating sites.
