Why, with a wave of her hand, can Winfrey cause any book, however shitty, to became and instant bestselling sensation?
Why, when Winfrey takes personal offense to a book she may or may not have featured in her book club, do the authors appear sniveling on her TV show and "stand trial" against the judgment and authority of Winfrey? Are they required by law? If she doesn't "pardon" them, will their careers be truly fucked? Is she that important to publishing houses, and more important, people who purchase books?
If she had a "gravy club," where every episode different recipes for gravies were compared, I would permit her some authority-- but not books. What kind of culture allows The Oprah Winfrey Show to become, in effect, the most (economically) important literary journal in the land?
