    Okay what's with this penchant all the Brazillian Athletes have for having single names?

    Why can't Brazillian athletes remember their last names?

    I can kind of sort of understand it with their national men's soccer team, as those guys are all near-godlike in their fame in Brazil and around the globe. So they kind of get a pass. Kind of.

    But then there's all the rest of their athletes. Like the women's volleyball players... "Julianna", "Larissa" etc.

    Even the women's soccer team, seems like well over half their players have this single name thing going on.


    "Marta"
    "Andreia"
    "Fabiana"
    "Maurine"
    "Rosana"
    "Bruna"
    "Danielle"
    "Barbara"
    "Ester" -- Really? Ester?


    Is it an ego thing? Sure seems like it. How massive an ego does one have to have to refer to oneself by only their first name? (Cher and Madonna being the exceptions of course)

    but maybe I'm reading it wrong, and in that case would anyone care to offer enlightenment?

    Or maybe there's just something in the water in that country that's making all their athletes forget their last names. :D

      Anything to do with Brazil is about ego and nothing but ego. I have never met a Brazilian who could shut up for a full minute about how wonderful BRAZIL was.

                                                  Brazilian people tend to have 4-5 names and normally shorten it to 1 of them or a nick name. This is certainly the case in Soccer.

                                                      mostly has to do with the combo names.. the average person out that way has at least 3 or 4 of them.. try remembering that hehe They don't make jerseys or uniforms big enough.

                                                          The Brazil women's soccer team gets almost no support from the Brazilian Soccer Federation so perhaps it's a cost saving thing having single names?

                                                              Great, thanks. I was hoping for some further insight into the slavery theory. Sadly though I think the single name thing the Brazilian athletes tend to favor may very well come off to many in the rest of the world as an ego thing, which has been the initial reaction I've had as well. Now I see there may be another reason for it.

                                                                  What he said. My best friend is from Brazil and I asked him very same question. Nothing to do with ego but with big ass names. So there was a Ronaldo, and another Ronaldo came up. So he named himself "little Ronaldo" so two won't get mistaken - Ronaldinho (sp). Now how did Kaka came up with his name is?

                                                                          Long ass names "xxx xxxx de xxxx xxx".. first name and nicknames are used in all settings not only sports, Brazil's ex-president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was known by most by his nickname, Lula.
