In AZ; Surprise worker fired after ties to sex industry revealed

    Erin Zlomek
    The Arizona Republic
    Nov. 8, 2007 12:00 AM

A Surprise Tennis and Racquet Complex worker has been fired after an anonymous letter sent to city staff outlined concerns over his previous career in the sex-entertainment industry.

Former Buckeye resident Geoff Mena, the former employee of Surprise's Community and Recreation Services Department, said he was the victim of discrimination. However, when city officials sought Mena's permission Wednesday to publicly disclose their reasons for firing him, he declined, city spokesman Ken Lynch said.

Mena said in an interview last week that he was terminated around Sept. 11. He said then that he was not given a reason for his firing but added that if it had anything to do with the anonymous letter concerning his previous career, he thought the firing was a violation of his freedom of speech and was discriminatory.

if you're always in a position where your employer needs you more than you need them you don't have to worry about this kind of thing.

it's a fine line to walk though.

i personally will never do anything but internet for the rest of my life, but i do feel for him and the shallow mindset of our country.

i bet over half of the people who work there look at porn.

    good luck chef jeff.

And to think, some of the guys here like to tell anyone who will listen that they are in adult.
I've trusted my sites to them for over a decade...

3rd thread about this, and 3rd time I've said the same thing.

I've said this since I joined in 2001, if you are working in this industry for extra beer money and shits and giggle, or to get yourself through college until you get a real job, you could very well be fucking up your future.

Quit deluding yourself into thinking that what we do is "normal." It is not, they call this adult, they call the other stuff mainstream for a reason.

How many people from GFY would you hire to work / rep for you in your mainstream company. A very limited pool would qualify for 1, an even smaller pool could pull it off without looking like some kind of demented sick fuck.

Imagine hiring the top "marketing"people on GFY...basically glorified sig whores. Their "techniques" which are laughable at best, work in an industry with a pawn shop mindset, but any reputable mainstream company would distance themselves from them in a heart beat.

Oh well, I'm just the guy that keeps pointing out the emperor wears no clothes.

Me personally, I don't care. Me I've told a lot of people what I've done in adult.

I'm 41 years old, and my corporate days are pretty much over. I don't know how old you are, but when you hit 40 you'll understand why.

I'll never run for office, and I'll never be in the position where a company I work for will require extensive security background check, or a morality clause. This is why I don't care.

However if I was young, just starting out in life. The only people who would know, would be my parents.

I guess it depends on how you define the "top" marketing people on GFY, but in my experience working in dating and having a foot in both mainstream and adult, the adult market is way more ahead in the game when it comes to online marketing. No, I'm talking about the internet famous sig whores, and the marketing techniques applied on GFY to potential affiliates here.

I would agree that there are some good REAL marketing people in this industry, but how do you sell yourself in a meeting when your portfolio includes sites name cumslurpingtrannys.com, fillmyasstotherim.com?

Your being 41 has nothing to do with it. From your response It seems that you will never start a company that will be successful enough to go public or need intensive amounts of venture capital. If that's the case then you are correct, having a clear name doesn't matter for you at this point. If you are planning on only doing adult then have at it.

But, if you are still pushing for bigger things in life I would argue that discretion is still important.

No. That's an example of the majority (some 80% of US citizens are religious) telling the minority how things are going to be. Welcome to democracy.

41 has a lot to do with it...I don't know how old you are...but as you get older you'll realize that it gets harder and harder to start over with a new company.

Unless you really are one of the top in your field, there are many younger people who will do your job much cheaper, and the company doesn't have to bother with retiring you.

                            So yeah age matters.

I have friends who never thought this would happen to them, one it's already starting to happen at 37, this guy is certified in just about anything and everything when it comes to needing a network security specialist.

Just less than a decade ago, he was highly coveted in his field. Did work during the millennium bug era for some big companies, even for the government. Sold off his company about 4 years ago, made some nice money, and decided to get back into it this last year. Big surprise...LOL.

I'm in my 30's. You are looking at it from an employee standpoint, I'm looking at it from an entrepreneurial standpoint... hence the disconnect.

If anyone is in their 40's and even consider becoming an employee it's insanity. Too late. Wrap it up.

But, companies are built and sold all the time by people of all ages, so if you have no inclination to do that then continue as you have been doing.

#1 I haven't worked for anyone since 1998 with the exception of working for a few months at Evilgeniuscash. I have been an entrepreneur almost all my life. Even in my 20's, I was a free lancer in the film industry.

#2 You don't know where you'll be in 1 year let alone 10. Things happen, business fail, and fail hard, leaving people broke beyond belief. Health fails, whatever there are many scenarios that can lead you back into the 9-5 life.
Damn for a while there I didn't want to have anything to do with sitting at a computer in my home all day long, I even went to dealer's school, and almost started dealing poker here in Vegas.

#3 I don't work in adult, with the exception of selling my sig this last month.
I stay here because I've been posting here for 6 years, and every now and then you can learn something here.
