As far as I remember Google saying in their documents; that hyphens between words are just treated the same as without them... they are basically just a space... Google will see the words in the URL anyways...
Now I do not know about the other search engines, from my experience they treat it the same... but I not 100% sure...
Personally I think it really depends on the domain name.

One without hyphen is best for branding/people who type it in. The one with hyphen is good for search engines. But major search engines are smart enough that the hyphen doesn't matter.Comment

What do you mean? There would be a possible trademark issue if your domain used the same word that another entity has registered but it would be an issue FOR SURE if you're also profiting (even indirectly) from their work.
Sometimes it's no biggy if what you're doing is reflecting a positive light on their product but if it's not then there IS a chance that they will force you to remove the letters in your domain that corresponds to their mark.
