I watched hearings on C-Span about this subject. It is clear to me that accounting procedures need to be improved. I don't recall what the figure came to, but I doubt that it was that high.

The fact is you posted misinformation which was easily countered by the fact that the annual defense budget is somewhere around 300 billion, so it is impossible to have over one trillion unaccounted for in a single year.

There is not any reason to believe any of the BS that you post, but if it gets you off, continue to post whatever BS you choose too. Fools have rights too.

I was mearly making an example of how much money 1.1 trillion equals out to on a per day basis, so some people could get an idea of the magnatitude of the amount.
The 1 year reference was not applicable to the time period in which the 1 trillion went unnacounted for.

More money for the Pentagon, CBS News Correspondent Vince Gonzales reports, while its own auditors admit the military cannot account for 25 percent of what it spends.

"According to some estimates we cannot track $2.3 trillion in transactions," Rumsfeld admitted.

$2.3 trillion ? that's $8,000 for every man, woman and child in America. To understand how the Pentagon can lose track of trillions, consider the case of one military accountant who tried to find out what happened to a mere $300 million.

"We know it's gone. But we don't know what they spent it on," said Jim Minnery, Defense Finance and Accounting Service.

I watched the hearings about this subject on C-Span and as I recall there was an amount of money that the Defense Department could not explain what the money had been spent on, but the 2.3 figure is not so much that they can't account for what the money was spent on but cannot account for what happened to the items that the money was spent on.

In other words items of all types are unaccounted for from our inventory. I personally suspect that some of the missing items have been covertly shipped to other countries, in order to bypass Congressional approval. I suspect this is why the accounting is so screwed up. In other words the accounting records have intentionally been screwed up.

None the less the Senators, at the time, demanded a better accounting, but 9/11 has undoubtedly quashed this, at least for some period of time.

To add something further. My career was in the military and at every level creative accounting took place and I am sure that it still does. Actually it was primarily to use up inventory so that when the fiscal year began, a base/unit would at least recieve the previous years budget.
