Namecheap Domains for $0.98 and coupon codes

    Just got this by email

Well, the year is half over and we at Namecheap are eagerly awaiting the start of the Olympics! We're kicking off this summer with a social media contest and details about our new business hosting package. Want to know more? Keep on reading!
Register or Transfer for $0.98 through our Twitter Retweet Promotion

We're currently in the midst of an awesome Twitter promotion that will enable you to register or transfer any com, net, or org domain for our lowest price ever: $0.98! This promotion includes free WhoisGuard and one year of free OpenXchange Personal Email. If we reach 30,000 valid retweets of a designated tweet from the @Namecheap Twitter account before July 15th, 2012, we'll activate the special $0.98 price for a 24 hour period beginning July 16th, 2012.

    Coupon Codes for July 2012

In anticipation for the upcoming London Games, we've got a discount on our standard TLDs (com/org/net/biz) for one year registrations and transfers in addition to a discount on one year registration and transfers of .TV domains to $21.99 using code OLYMPICSUMMER. This code is limited to 30 domains per account.

We're confident that our hosting would win a gold, so take off 20% off your billing cycle for any shared hosting package using code GOLDMEDAL.

every single $1 domain from every company is limited to one per person. They have to pay almost $8 to verisign for a .com.

The premise of charging for what is given to them free by enom is. I've had thousands of domains with them. They would get a lot of respect by making that outright free.

Maybe I did something wrong, but Namecheap wouldn't give me my coupon code until I at least "followed" them on Twitter...until I did that it would say I didn't meet the requirements.

So if some restaurants will give you free coke with your meal you would call other restaurants charging you for coke scammers?
Some registrars charge for whois, some don't its as simple as that. Also other things should be considered, 10$ domain + 3$ privacy is better than 14$ domain and "free" privacy (just a random example, not based on true facts)

Where do you get the idea that its uncommon? Most of the registrars charge for whois protection. So its pretty common.

I thought it was standard to charge for it, namecheap is the only place I get it. I have domains at godaddy, lcn and 123-reg who all charge for it.
