Happens every couple of days. Remove the gfy cookies and log in again and it works. Pretty annoying actually considering I used to stay logged in for months or even years

Sounds like they are clustering and using nginx as a front end server.
My suggestion to them is to start using MemSQL to reduce load on the database server, not that it has anything to do with this error, but it could reduce the amount of servers they use. I'd also enable memcached for vBulletin.
They could get this down to a single server.
