Run as far away as possible from the companies your competitors are promoting. You'll get nowhere shilling shit that's being shilled elsewhere.
Pickaniche. Research. If you don't read anything bad about them, give 'em a shot.
Insider Tip: A lot of small programs that have no marketing budget and few affiliates are very willing to build relationships with people who are willing to send them traffic and sales. A lot of them have very loyal customers who rebill for years.

First what type of traffic do you have or can you generate?
Then look at the sites which fit the traffic. Look at it like a surfer, very skeptically. Is the content good enough, different, unique, added often and how much is the customer getting for his money?
If you can tick all these boxes the last one is the the most important. Can it get your dick twitching?
If yes sign up and look again at the content offered to you to promote the site and if it performs like it should and backs up the tour. Go test it and see how it works and if you get paid. All goes well, build. doesn't pull the links.
