They haven't bothered? Not quite! The amount of marketing that goes into a movie runs easily into millions and millions, but if the movie isn't that well received by the testers (where you would get your prior release versions) then they would save some of that marketing cash. There are also the awards consideration versions, which is why a movie would hit the screens with awards attached already.

There's a lot more to something than just "if you build it, they will come". Just ask Paul Markham!
