semantics are for chomsky and other linguists who fail to realize linguistic differences aren't the definitive factor in validity.
you haven't said "I do" in a legally recognized fashion...whether it be marriage or common law, then you have a way out with no financial/arbitrary obligation.
to get "semantics" out of the way...
X is single = (df) If X is neither financially nor obligated to Y in any fashion according to accepted legal standards, then X is single.
Being single is a grand thing...
