What's the "best" baby monitor? Reviews on Amazon made things more complicated..

That's one thing that there really isn't a "best of". I'm sure you can spend more money on one than the other. But no point really. We have three little ones and each room has a different monitor. They all do the same thing.
One has a video camera on it and which you can view over the web. I think we might have used that function twice. -
Motorola MBP33 is what we got. There's another Motorola that's a little more expensive and can pan, tilt and zoom but we bought it for an infant who is always in his crib. No need to get one that moves. As soon as a kid can climb out of his crib and leave the room any camera is going to be of limited valueI like pie.Comment

Yeah...the one we have with the cam is a Motorola.
I read a blog post where some used an older iphone and facetime to monitor their kid in the crib.Comment

Night vision is the only MUST HAVE function. We got a cheap monitor made by First Alert when my son was born. It worked fine, night vision was great but range and battery life sucked.
That one had a microphone that was so sensitive that you could hear the baby breathe from almost 6 feet away.I like pie.Comment

Even if the crib is in the parent's room, the baby will take naps. During that time you'll need to be doing other things like laundry, dishes, making dinner, taking a shower, etc.
The First Alert monitor would go to a white screen once in a while. It was rare but it happened.
The Motorola has never crashed. The only real bitch I have with it is the night video quality. We have a little nightlight in the corner of the room and if we forget to turn that on the video quality really sucks. It doesn't add that much light to the room but it's enough to make a difference.
Audio might be a little wonky too. If a loud car goes by, I hear the car really loud through the monitor even though the car was not really all that loud without the monitor. Some sounds are disproportionately loud.I like pie.Comment
