I tried to explain this to people. They kept telling me that the fire was 2 miles away, I was totally safe.

These are the best pictures I have seen yet. Being as close to this fire as I was, it captures the essence of the situation that was this firestorm.

According to a study based on Australian wind-driven firestorms (similar to the Santa Anas in So Cal), embers can travel very very far from the main body of the fire.
