How much RAM for a server?

How much RAM is enough for a server with 2 paysites and 2 simple affiliate sites with FHG's. Is 512 mb too low? What should you have for pages to be able to load quickly? tia

yes 512 is too little. If you are hosting galleries and expecting a good amount of traffic I would suggest a minimum of 2 GB.

You might need Dual Xeon's with 4 GB RAM if you have a lot going on.

yup, minimum 1gb but i would definitely recommend at least 2gb from what youve posted and possibly some faster than normal drives. such as sata raptors or SAS (the latest technology replacing SCSI)

What they said 2GB should be your MINIMUM but for a program with lots of FHGs and only a moderate amount of database use I'd suggest 4GB. A dual core/processor server is never a bad thing but by far the most important factor is the RAM.

With the additional RAM you have more flexibility to greatly increase the amount of Apache child processes that can spawn.

Depends how much traffic you'll get. Start with 1GB and update when necessary.

Paysite should load fast enough for viewers, and I recommend having at least 2GB to start with, and of course upgrade when required.

We just got a quad core 8 GB of RAM and Microsoft Windows Server Enterprise Edition. That will handle anything and everything you got throwing at it for a while till your traffic builds up to the level you need another server and when you need another server because the traffic is over powering the server that means you be making big time coin.
Not cheap stuff but it will last quite a long time.

2GB should be fine and when it eventually bottlenecks plan on an upgrade to 4GB. The question nobody here has asked that they should have is what processor comes with this server? I would recommend that you at least go with a Dual Core Pentium, if not a Core2. A Dual or Quad Xeon would be "nice" but at this juncture in your business is probably not necessary.

Minimum a Core2 Duo, and more important 2 gigs of DDR2 ram ( and as suggested upgrade to 4 gigs when required ).

The FHG are the ' problem ' , since when they get listed, a ton of hits comes all at the same time , then to dissapear with 8 - 10 hours ....
So the load is big for peeks.

Not sure how big your site is, but you could be wasting money on too much processing power or RAM if you don't need it yet. I've seen P4 2.4GHz with 1 GB of RAM do the trick for many people. It technically depends on how much RAM is needed to cache the entire website and keep it ready for delivery for any web requests. While the website is left in memory, it can be more quickly delivered to visitors so the hard drive doesn't have to be accessed for delivery of the content.

That type of platform is probably a good choice for all your html sites and beta testing or light load on your other site but you need to anticipate making a switch to dedicated when your php/mysql site starts to get busy.

Ram is so cheap now that there is no reason why you could not max out your motherboards... if you are hosting your one website(s)...

Ram is dirt cheap now a days, I wouldn't' settle for anything less than 1 GB...

Try to negotiate once-off fees for upgrades such as RAM or hard drives, it's ridiculous that some hosts want to charge $30/mo for a drive that has a capital cost of $60. Same goes for RAM, even though it can fail it is NOT what I'd consider a consumable item!
