Also the possibility of streaming video / music / images from my laptop/desktop is there too.

I suspect you have not used a Smart TV.

Yes they leave a hell of a lot to be desired when it comes to user input - however I do still use these for watching youtube videos on the big screen.

There are good and bad, your idea on how it works is way off base.
