Yikes, no offense but that tableless design would be better off in tables if they're unable to do CSS any better than what is on that site.

It does work, and so isn't really bad.

                            But this:
                            <div align="center"><div class="sh1"><div class="sh2"><div class="sh3"><div class="sh4"><div class="sh5"><div class="sh6"><div class="sh7"><div class="sh8"><div class="mdiv1"><div class="xd1"><div class="xd1a"><div class="xd2"><div class="xtop"><div class="xlogo">

is just bad CSS form. While it does work, it just defeats the purpose of what CSS is intended for.
If they're unable to group the classes together properly, it would have been far less code to just use a table.

on a "design only" basis, not many, esp when talking about fixed layouts. Elastic layouts are a very different thing, tho. But most people uses tableless as short for XHTML. And then, we're talking day and night, esp if we talk about dynamic content, SE oriented content, layered designs, design for devices and so on and so on and so on

I have a CSS rendered blog... I actually get surfers that complain because they are using OLD versions of browsers on their Windows 98 boxes!

Of course they are form other countries with no money so I couldn't give a shit about what they say...

Well, for one... check out: http://www.csszengarden.com/
and click on some of the design links in the right menu.

For another, imagine being able to put any image or text anywhere on a page regardless of whether or not it's over another element, or under... or being able to make changes to the entire design on all pages with a simple change to one css file.

Another reason is that you can have all of your best SE content at the top of the page with images, banners and other stuff at the bottom of the page and yet still have it render in the browser as if the banners and menu are at the top.

That's just some of the reasons.

I have to ask the question - why do hot about specifically table-less CSS? Pretty much all of the CSS documents I can find say that there are some times when using a table (with styles and DIVs) is a much better and more reliable way to do things than a tableless arrangement.

                                                        So, hey, what's the deal?

CSS is always easier and more flexible than html.

There are few who actually know what they are doing when it comes to programming the code properly.

Basically why it is better (stuartd already gave great points) is that you can change mass amounts of content with small changes to your CSS file.

It works best for Templates but i use it in all my code now as standard.

Dont be fooled by people just because they toss some lines of code in <div>'s does not mean its proper, without proper coding you are basically eliminating the main point of CSS.

That is to compress the code and make it so you can change entire layouts with small additions/subtractions to your files.

again i would have to warn people, especially it seems adult designers are way behind when it comes to doing proper coding, without the right person you may end up spending more time fixing the code then paying someone who knows what they are doing to do it proper in the firstplace.

It's an argument that will go on forever....though HTML 5 looks like it may end that first argument.

From a developers standpoint the cleanliness that CSS combined with XHTML (or well written HTML) offers is the main reason that I use that combo. When you pull all of the styling elements out of the clean XHTML/HTML code it is 10000000000x easier to then go back and add PHP tags required by most CMS's or custom scripts.

The next reason is the ability to make tweaks to my design in the development stage. Usually my mock up in Photoshop or Fireworks will only be a 80&#37; representation of what I am looking to accomplish. So CSS is key in allowing me the quickly change little things like Font size, DIV size, border size/style on quickly and efficiently without having to dig through code.
