                    So they snuck out some tourist, sounds like they should have been thankfull they were going to a better place, couldnt have been any worse then the conditions at the dome. Wow some people gave them dirty looks. People looted vending machines, holy shit! very little food and water for 5 days and people broke into vending machines. I would have too.

                    It sounds like they were more horrified about being tossed into a natural disaster, fearing for their lives from the storm, they probably never knew that many black people existed muchless were they ever around that many before, and black person could probably glance at them and they would fear for their lives. Threw all of that in with backed up shit and piss and no food and sleeping on the floor, and they got to leave while others were stuck there.

                            It was written by an officer for the Pennsylvania National Guard. If you have other stats on the death toll by murders, let me know. With all these threats of abuse, murder, and groups of men brandishing guns, it's amazing that they all made it out alive to tell the tale. Yet most of the comments on the link you provide say the situation was "desperate" and don't comport with the murders and rapes that you speak of. The reaction is not something that would be unexpected if you had to live in your own toilet for days without food and water.

                            One would think there would be official stats somewhere.

                                        How about going to check out the crime stats in those cities since the Katrina refugees came to town?

                                                            During a hurricane, being packed into a building with 20K+ people, mostly poor, and I am sure some criminals as well, the outside of the building surronded by water, no sewer systems working, very little supplies, hot as hell, in the dark, wet damp conditions... under THOSE conditions, yes i lower my standards of what I consider civilized and no one being murdered i think was surprising considering the circumstances. Less than 5% stayed behind. Of those who stayed it was mostly the worst of the worst, the old the poor, the uneducated, the ignorant, the handicaped, and some tourist mixed in.

                                                                                                                                    The people did not destroy New Orleans unless if you call breaking a window to a flooded grocery store destroying. There was a few fires, some of which were caused by gas mains erupting.

You pack up your car, drive 20 mins and you are safe. No one is stuck "in" the disastor, so if you want to compare SD and Qualcomm to anything do it to the AstroDome which took in thousands of Katrina people who were evacuated from New Orleans, how much crime was committed there OUTSIDE of the disastor where people were safe. It was the same "animals" that were bused from the superdome to there. They were given sanitory conditions, a cot, clean clothes, a toliet that flushes, food, and the kids even got some toys. No but no one wants to compare Qualcomm to that, they want to compare it to the superdome and pat themselves on the back because they think they are far superrior people for conducting themselves so well through their little disastor.

Had most of the people in New Orleans at least driven 20 minutes out of town, things would have been entirely different. They didn't, it sucked, and they then get mad at the government for not helping them out.

Drive 20 minutes out of town? Are you serious? how can you go on and on when it is clear as fucking day you don;t know what you are talking about. People couldn;t just get in their car and drive 20 minutes away from a hurricane. Maybe you can from a fire but not a hurricane. People were driving over 1,000 miles just to fine a hotel room. What were they suppose to do, drive 20 minutes away, sit on the side of he interstate for 3 - 4 weeks before they let people back in the city??? 20 mins away from New Orleans is the subburbs which were flooded and got fucked as well, Many areas did not have power for weeks and did not let people back in for weeks. IF they had a car the best they could have done was drive about 2 hours away to the west and live out of their car for 3 week just to come home to a destroyed house and then live in their car for another 6 months while they wait for a fema trailer. But you right its as simple as them driving 20 mins out of time, let the hurricane pass and them come back.

There is 1 million people in the metro area, all of these people had THREE (3) interstates to evacuate out of . We are surronded by water. We still evacuated 95% of the population in 36 hours. The AREA affected by the hurricane is massive compared to the fire. You can get in your car and drive into town and be safe. You have to get in your car and drive hundreds of miles to be safe. You also have millions of others from other towns being evacuated clogging up the few amount of main roads in the area. But you right, us New orleans people be stupid, we cant evacuate like dem peeps over on da west coast, dem sum smart mutherfuckers, when dey be told to leave dey just get up and go like smart peeps.

Do you think this statement would hold true if it was your ghetto ? I don't remember anyone in New Orleans who made more than 15K a year making those comments either. So your subburbs are being evacuated, what is the demographic there? There are parts of new orleans that are middle and upper class and everyone in those areas got out asap. If anything this is a class thing, so your middle class subburbs are getting evacuated and you trying to compare that mentalitly to poor people from the inner city.

                                                                                                                                                                                        My parents sat in traffic for 9 hours just to get to BR which would normaly take 90 mins. It then took them another 8 hours to get to sheveport. What should have taken 5 hours total took 17. They evacuated before the mandatory orders went into affect, and before the interstates really got backed up. But I will tell them they need to go take pointers from those west coast people on how to get out faster.

                                                                                                                                                                                                Seriously there was a group from Canada i believe, i want to say the mounted police or something, that was the first to get into st bernard (subburb just south east of new orleans, which was harder hit). They were there and helping save people before the coast guard or fema was even close. Fema and crew was working mostly on the city and a lot of the surronding areas didnt get any help at all for days.

                                                                                                                                                                                                    yeah prior to that though it was close for hours. the camp pendleton fire issue caused it to close down today for a few minutes. makes you wonder where our priorities as a country really are.

                                                                                                                                                                                                        You want to compare your brush fires to Katrina, use this area as a fair example. It just out side the city limits, subburb, 67K people, 95% evacuated. Over 100 died, 35 in a nursing home. Household income is 44K, the area is middle class (mostly) and 90% white. Maybe you can related to that. 25K homes in just this area was destroyed.
