First of all you don't know what it is like until you go through it or lived it. I'll educate you a little bit.
The evacuation orders did not come till less than 36 hours before the hurricane hit. Not as much time as you think.
99% of the people with the means to leave did. there was ove 1 million people in the meto area, at most 50K were left. Some of these people were tourist who were trapped. Some were handicapped, some were in nursing homes or in hospitols. A lot of the people who died were from hospitals and nursing homes. There were 35 people killed in a nursing home just 15 mins from where I use to live.
- It cost money to evacuate. Gas, hotel, etc.. some people actually are check to check with maxed out credit cards some people dont have cars, and some people are just stupid and complacent and thought this one would miss us like the last 10 did. You say take a bus (there was none offered to leave team), get in your car, you would be surprised how many poor people dont own cars, tens of thousands many of which use the public transit system to get to work so they can get buy without having a car.
Some people who were stuck were just stuck and really didnt have a way out. Some could have left i agree with that but not all of them, either way why they were still there is irrelevant. You think the USA would be a little better prepaired to help out after the fact. I dont make excuses for the ones that could have left, they stayed and got fucked but it doesn't make things any less devistateing.
You are crazy if you think 100% of the people in your town would leave if the govt told them to get out, that something bad was going to happen tomorrow. Especially if they had been told that several times before over the years and nothing happened. Its not like fires that you can see the smoke in the distance and you know it is time to get the fuck and you have the time to do it. I am sure everyone who saw a wall of water at them would have gotten out of dodge if they could have but it was too late. Wild fires is just a different kind of event, you see it coming and its a lot more convincing with the houses a couple streets over are burning then a hurricane that is a couple days away.
