Am I the only one that gets pissed at people who think the federal government is here to save us from everything????
They have wildfires in California people. It happens every year. Why is this so surprising?
They have hurricanes along the gulf coast too, and tornadoes in the midwest, and intense heat in the southwest, and freezing fucking cold in the northern midwest, and huge snowstorms in the Rockies and the northeast... God people.. did you not pay attention before you moved there??? SHIT HAPPENS!!!!!!!
Get out of your house, hope like hell your insurance is paid up, and deal with life when it is over. Yeah it sucks... but what ya gonna do??? Move somewhere else where SHIT HAPPENS????
The government is here to assist if they can.. but to save your ass because you can't save yourself????? You may as well get that casket ready right now if that's what you are waiting for.
The last time Canada offered to send Mars bombers and helicopters to CA to put out fires they rudely declined. They won't be offering again any time soon.

or katrina? we just SENT ships and crews and they let them simply sit there for 'security reasons' lol
As a former SoCal Firefighter, everything that can be done is being done. State and local departments have mutual aid agreements between them to share resources.
Bush has declared a Federal Emergency for 7 Socal Counties which will speed up relief in the form of money.

That's what the government is there for... you pay them tax dollars to organize the country and to fix shit like this.

If you think your tax dollars are there to save your ass in a catastrophe, you are sadly mistaken.... as were all the people that felt the federal government was to blame for Katrina.
I grew up knowing that I should save for a rainy day. I grew up knowing I should prepare for bad times.
Taxes pay for roads, and schools, and old people to have medication they can't afford. There's nothing in there that talks about the feds coming to your rescue because you were too stupid to get out in time.
Insurance fixes shit like this.. that's why it's insurance. You are insured against the unknown. Taxes are entirely different and have nothing to do with it.
that cavalry should be staged before the fires even happen. they know every year that cali gets owned during the santa anas. they know for a fact that the resources are so thin that they can never handle it, they know that homes will burn. bureaucracy lets peoples homes burn. plain and simple.
The same reason he has done nothing for Louisiana.
He is fully absorbed in his own bullshit while trying to cover lie after lie.
Take me to task for saying such a thing, but if we are going to spend federal money in Louisiana, I would much rather they build a fucking city where you can't get 25 feet of water during a flood.
I don't give a rats ass about the history of the city. It was a shithole when they built it in the first place (does anyone know the history of the "quarters" in Louisiana??? If not, you should read up on them. Swampland kids.... who wants to live there???). If the American people really want a city right there, then why not build it in a logical place?
Great location for a harbor, great location for a resort.. shitty location for a city.
Again, why should the feds be on the hook for something where there is a perfectly acceptable commercial product available to you..... INSURANCE!!!!
Don't know about the rest of you (again), but just like with 9/11... why the hell did we give $1.5 million to each of the victims families???? Where did it say that tax dollars should be spent that way?.... When did we become such a freakin welfare state?

I agree and disagree at the same time.
So where's the balance? People want amazing social services, but they want low tax rates.
Resources are extremely thin, but someone may have paid $200 less in taxes this year (woo hoo.... we can take that vacation to Disney this year!!!!! Wait... did it burn down yet?)
Choices that people made last year, 2 years ago, 5-10 years ago are what help their homes to burn just as much as the bureaucracy that can't get it taken care of in the moment. There's only so many resources to go around in the moment. Unless they are totally fucking inept (can happen.. has happened), they can only get so much done and there inevitably will be loss somewhere for someone.

ummm flood insurance is a government program and can't buy it.
President George W. Bush has declared an emergency in California and ordered federal aid to be directed to the fire-stricken region.
The Pentagon has sent six Air Force and National Guard water-dropping planes to help tackle the blaze while 1,500 National Guard troops are being deployed to help manage evacuations and assist firefighting efforts.
If I paid taxes as high as you americanos, you bet your cheeks that I would expect the government to intervene.
Our taxes in comparison to some European countries are relatively low. I also believe we are lower than Canada, yes?
But hey, isn't that part of the great American debate??? How much we want the government to intervene? You can't have it both ways. You either want them in your life, or you want them out. Straddling the fence gets no one nowhere.
