I have a great idea for a smartphone app - what do I do?

Now obviously I'm aware everyone says theirs is a 'great' idea, and only some of them actually are, so ignoring the fact of whether what I think is great equates to the marketplace thinking the same, wtf do I do with this idea for a smartphone app I have?

Anyone able to point me in the direction I need to be going?

    Thanks

      elance, rentacoder or odesk

Just make sure you have a really clear outline of what you need, pick someone with a lot of reviews on the site, and expect to get ripped off a few times at that. But in the end you'll have it done

shake - my concern is obviously someone who can make apps just taking my idea. I expect 100% to get the idea stolen if I go those routes

Hmm, that is a concern. While some outsourcing companies have non-disclosure agreements, I could understand not trusting they wouldn't run off with the idea anyways, and good luck finding them again.

It might be possible to have someone build part of the application without them knowing exactly what it will do. Maybe different parties build 2-3 parts of the app each - then you put it together yourself?

Another thought is that if the idea is that good, someone else will copy you as soon as the idea is public anyway. Your best protection is to build a brand that people know, with a catchy name. Most people still use the "Shazam" App to tag songs, but there are better alternatives...

Good luck to you in anycase.

That's pretty well it. It'll be copied the day after you release it, anyway.

Hiring foreign programmers will instantly turn your great idea into fail. Copycats will make it even worse - and help destroy your (not yet existant) rep with their sub-par versions of your sub-par foreign-coded app.

Learn to do it yourself, or hire local people to help you develop it. If you can't do it yourself you need a team. A LOCAL team. The minute you contact somebody via email or over the phone, your "idea" is marginalized, stolen, and destroyed. If you have a "great" idea, nobody in India is going to bring it to life.

Download the SDK, implement the stuff, publish your app in the store. It's as simple as that.

Agreed on all of that, but there's no way a thick cunt like me is gonna be able to learn, so, that student idea is a great one, thanks

If you want it done right there are some reputable programmers. Candyflip has benn promoting his services building apps. Search for comments from people who have used him.

I've never met a rich person who did at all themselves - marketing, programing, business development, bookkeeping, everything. Everyone I know who is successful hires good programmers, good systems people, etc. I recently brought in a marketing and biz dev person because that's not my forte. Much of wisdom is knowing what it is you don't know.
