Because it gave you a competitive advantage. One signup at $35 was worth alot more to you than it was to me back then, so if we were buying adwords traffic, or paid TGP spots, or whatever, you could afford to pay more for those spots than I could because you needed a smaller profit to get by.

On the same note, it would even affect things like gallery submissions. Since you can get by with lower margins, you can put more content on your galleries and that increases your chance of getting listed.

Of course these are all hypotheticals, nobody has empirical data on stuff like this....but Canadian and EU webmasters did have a competitive advantage over US webmasters for a long time because of the exchange rate...now US and CAD are basically even, and you guys have been bitching and moaning about it ever since the dollar started sliding.

You're now in the same boat that we were in for several years, and there have been about a bazillion threads on this board bitching and moaning and complaining about the stupid US and their stupid president and stupid dollar.....I'm saying get over it and STOP FUCKING WHINING.

I also think it's hilarious that the same people who make these bitch and moan threads about the dollar are in here practically jumping for joy because US webmasters have to pay for something in euros now.

Put your dick back in your pants Lenny, we're just talking here, aren't we?

Sorry, economically speaking we were being paid the same back then. You were being paid in USD, I was being paid in USD. The fact that you live in the US and I live in Canada is the difference, but certainly I can tell you that things like gas and a lot of cost-of-living type goods were (and still are) a lot cheaper for you than they are for us. like I said, there are factors that served to even a lot of it out, it was never the "huge advantage" we had over you that you'd like to make it out to be. In fact it wasn't about you at all.

The only fact relevant to the discussion in all that is that WE as Canadian webmasters, at least those of us who have been in the business since prior to 2002 or so, have taken roughly a 40-50% cut in pay over time. Put yourself in that situation and see how much bitching YOU do hoss. I'm betting you and your fellow countrymen would have put up far more bitching and moaning threads than we have. It matters not that we were pulling in extra money from the excellent exhange rate, it is a drop in income nonetheless.

And no one here that I can see is jumping for joy at americans now getting a taste of the same. I merely pointed it out is all, and advised some of the more big-mouthed of you to try and keep the "Ah quit your bitching/crybabies" comments to yourselves once in a while. YOU would to a man all be bitching just as loudly and you know it. Now you see how it feels, if only in a very small way, with just this one website (for now).

Lenny you really didn't think this one thru. The extra value Canadians got was in the extra income to buy more clothes, cars, homes. In business it had 0 advantage as we got paid in US$ and had to buy/pay for everything in US$ just like you. We can't buy more content, or more traffic or more sites because we got 30-40% more Canadian dollars unless people charged us the same price they would charge you but only in CDN instead of US. If the hun was charging you $200 US a spot and us $200 CDN for the same spot then your theory would be correct. Fact is we all paid the $200 US.

So we got a bit extra buying power in Canada for living and extra's in life, but not in business like you claim. Also the cost of living is higher in canada with higher prices in fuel, booze, taxes, homes, cars, etc etc etc. So there was still extra buying power but nowhere near what the 30-40% extra would make you believe.

I got this email too. It's fine for the money that's in there now that got the 1:1 direct exchange, but for adding new money, my cost just went up considerably per 1k clicks. I don't think I can run 80% of my campaigns profitably now. I'm far from a big fish, but this is gonna hurt.

All I'm saying is that because the dollars you were paid went further in your currency, you could operate with a lower margin than a US webmaster and still make a living.

You can't claim one thing is true and not acknowledge that the other is true also.
If you're doing the same amount of signups, and bringing in the same amount of USD as you were before.....yet claiming a 40-50% drop in income because of the conversion.....then that MUST mean that you were getting paid 40-50% more when the conversion rate was favorable for you, which means that you did in fact have an advantage over US webmasters.

Can't you just adjust your bids on your campaigns?

I did notice that they left all of my $1 bids at 1 euro...but I guess that's what the 1 for 1 exchange was intended to make up for.

Just because it's billed in euros doesn't mean you have to bid the same euros now as you did dollars before. You can lower your bids across the board and you "should" receive around the same number of clicks. It's not like all your competitors can all of a sudden afford to pay 30-40% more for the traffic too.

I rarely bid above the min of 80 cents (60 cents when they first started, those days were great!) Now that 80 cents is .80 euro

I target words with less volume but load up campaigns with tons of words instead of just a few big volume words like big tits, milf, etc.

I had my own little system of key word research and targeting based on never bidding above the min. Those campaigns probably can't run anymore. The few where I bid high on words I knew I could convert may be able to stay, particularly if this chases out some of the bigger spenders. (I have no idea if that will actually happen or not)

I would agree to some extent. But an advantage over US webmaster in terms of anything business related I would disagree. In spending income for day to day life being spent in Canada in Canadian dollars. Then yes. And no doubt it took less work to be able to cover basic living costs if thats the route you choose to go. For hobbiests and such.

Actually if anything, we had the advantage over other Canadians who weren't doing online business. Someone here working a regular job getting paid in Canadian dollars wasn't seeing that 50% bonus on exchange.

Like axeman said, the only advantage here was within our own cost of living costs being better covered with that 50% bonus. We were all still being paid in the same currency, both US and Canadian webmasters alike. If you earned $200 USD on a given day and so did I we got paid the same. The fact that my $200 may have went a bit further where I am is really neither here nor there. It mattered not one wit of advantage in business, again as Axeman pointed out.

I actually lived in Canada during those good exchange days then moved to Florida during those same days and I barely noticed a difference in my buying power and spending abilities. Things in the US were much cheaper and offset a lot of it. Back in Canada now and no question you have felt the drop in exchange the past year in your buying power.

Since they're switching to euros wouldn't the price be 7.04 EUR still? I'd assume that they were just switching to a euros just to save on the exchange rate? Would only get more expensive for US buyers if the dollar continually weakened against the euro (which it will).
NO...thats what pisses me off about EUROPE and the FUCKING EURO.

first gulf war cost next to nothing for the US . In fact, they probably did a net profit.

Japan paid most of it . Research yourself and you will see ....

OK, guys...I've been reading this thread and I have come to these conclusions:

                                            1. I don't blame AskJolene for what they did. They did it the right way and didn't rip US webmasters off. They actually gave US webmasters a bonus till their accounts are depleted. However, as soon as I need to put more funds in my AJ account: thier traffic officialy become 40% more expensive. AJ is one of my favorite places to buy traffic from and now I need to take another look into weather I can still make money with it.

                                            2. Forgien webmasters are getting fucked too because their payouts are officially 40% lower. That sucks too.

Hopefully the dollar will get it's act together soon.

                                            Jay

Hey, maybe all the non-US webmasters complaining about the crappy exchange rate can pick up all those US bonds which China and Japan dumped the other day? That should help the USD.

Ahh well if they've raised the minimum bid then that definitely hurts. If they had left everything as-is then the change wouldn't really be an issue.

On another note, all of the Canadians who don't think they had an advantage before, but think they're taking it up the ass now, really need to learn some basic math.

You can't have it both ways. If the exchange rate is fucking you big time right now, then it had to have helped you to the same degree before. That's just the way numbers work, no matter how you try to justify it in your mind by talking about the price of this or the tax on that. It's simple math.

Lenny, it seems not only do you not get it but you simply don't want to get it either. I don't know any other way to say it than to tell you that when I started in this business I began earning a certain amount of money. Since then, because of the declining value of the USD I am now earning over 40% LESS than I was before.

It's really that simple, no matter how much you'd like to try and make me believe otherwise.

And this thread, in my view, is about US webmasters now getting a small taste of that very same thing. I hazard a guess that many of you will get a much bigger taste once more companies out there start doing business in Euros instead of the USD.

And as I said earlier, it's not about jumping for joy on my part, it's about welcoming you to the "USD sucks right now" crowd. That's all. Welcome.

There doesn't seem to be many of the "A weak dollar is good" crowd in here. If you think this is bad your really going to hate it when the prices on everyday products/consumables start to rise. You guys are going to get ass fucked good and hard over the next year.

That's how exchange rates work.. It's also going to still fuck over the European webmasters as well. So I dunno why they are so happy about this, maybe the reality hasn't sat in with them just yet.

They used to be able to convert 100 EUR to $142.9 USD and buy "more" traffic. Now they just lost that "extra" $42 dollars that they used to get from converting EURO's to USD. Which might have helped offset the later conversion rates.

Now if you are a European webmaster, you just get fucked a little earlier in this case. Before if you were paid in USD you could take that USD and buy traffic at a 1:1 ratio and make a little more off that money before you converted it to EURO's.

Now you make your sales and have to convert USD's to EURO's before you get that chance to make more by buying traffic.

With out the payouts matching in most cases I think this will hurt AJ more than it helps them. They just made it much harder for pretty much "all" webmasters to make a profit, in a already tight margin.

                                                                      You are missing the point..

When they charged in USD a Euro webmaster had more "buying power" when converting from EUR to USD. Meaning they could buy roughly a extra 40% worth of traffic than what they can buy now.

If $100 USD worth of traffic is now $100 EUR you have lost 40% just the same as a US webmaster has.

So if you were paid in USD yes you lost say 40% in on the conversion rate. However if you originally bought with EURO's you had a extra 40% worth of traffic when it was billed in USD.

So while you might have lost on one end you had the possibility to make up for that on the other end if you were smart. Now that possibility has been taken away and you are getting screwed more now than ever.

You guys always bitch when it comes to the part where you have to convert your money to EURO's. Yet we never hear any crying when you guys are buying stuff in USD.

Something that costs me $100 USD only costs you $60 if you converted from Euro's. A server that costs me $140 a month cost's you $100. So you damn sure have some good with your bad if you are smart and know what you are doing.

That's all. Welcome.

What I'm getting at, is we always hear you guys complain about losing on the conversion from USD to Euro's. Yet we don't hear too much bitching when you are getting more buying power on the flip side.

As I said before, when you convert from Euro to USD to "had" the opportunity to buy 40% more traffic, which has a damn good chance in making up for that 40% loss when you convert back to Euro.

Now you don't get that extra 40% to play with. So this deal is screwing both US webmasters and Euro webmasters just the same. Only people that will benefit is AJ.

In the reality of things, I don't think it's going to benefit AJ either, because they are making the already thin profit margin for buying traffic even thinner. So it's likely going to end up with many webmasters buying less traffic. Which means less money for AJ.

The smarter thing for them to have done, would have been to keep billing in USD but gradually raise the minimum bids.

Canadian car buyers have been the victims of an illegal plot by automakers to inflate the prices of cars in Canada and discourage cross-border car buying, according to a $2-billion class-action lawsuit.

The suit, filed by the Toronto law firm of Juroviesky and Ricci LLP, accuses the automakers of conspiring "to lessen competition and to unreasonably enhance the price of new cars sold in Canada," according to the statement of claim.

Most of the big North American and Japanese vehicle makers are named as defendants in the suit, along with the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association and its U.S. counterpart, the National Automobile Dealers Association.

The suit was filed on behalf of four Toronto residents who said they paid much more for their vehicles in Canada than identically equipped models in the U.S. The statement of claim alleges that the "price for identical product from U.S sources could be 25 to 35 per cent lower on average than in Canada" after adjusting for the exchange rate.

The suit gives a number of examples of recent large price differences in the same vehicles when the Canadian dollar was trading above 98 cents US:

                                                                              * A Chrysler Grand Cherokee Laredo that was advertised for $29,215 in the U.S. and $36,215 in Canada
                                                                              * A Honda Odyssey Minivan that was advertised for $25,645 in the U.S. and $33,333 in Canada
                                                                              * A Range Rover Sport that was advertised for $58,500 in the U.S. and $78,300 in Canada

The lawsuit covers anyone who bought a vehicle in Canada between August 2005 and August 2007. It requires court approval to be certified as a class action.

Among other things, the lawsuit alleges that the defendants reduced competition by:

                                                                              * requiring buyers to agree not to export their vehicles
                                                                              * failing to honour warranties in Canada if vehicles were bought in the U.S.
                                                                              * threatening or penalizing dealers who failed to follow the automakers' rules

The statement of claim's allegations have not been proven in court. In addition to $2 billion in general damages, the suit seeks $100 million in punitive damages.

A spokesperson for one of the defendants, the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association, told CBCNews.ca he hasn't seen any documentation and wouldn't comment on the lawsuit's allegations.

With the Canadian dollar near parity with the U.S. greenback, it has become easy to compare prices of similar vehicles on each side of the border.

What you're seeing here is a little taste of what we've been having to deal with for several years now, a reverse-screwing if you will.

Now maybe some of you yanks will finally realize what it means to lose 30 or 40 % on exchange. And like KK pointed out, at least they are giving you 1:1 on your existing funds in your AJ accounts, that's something at least.

But just for a moment imagine how you'd feel if it wasn't just a 30% screwing on your ad campain at one site but a 40% loss on your entire web-based income. I'm not saying anyone here said it, but let's try and lay off the "bunch of whiners" comments from now on whenever you see a Canuck bitch about the USD. I think we have good reason to be a bit miffed at it.

It simply hasn't and won't. So when you pay out in US$, make US$ and pay higher cost of living the extra exchange helped that. When it was 40-50% it definitely made a difference in extra spending power in canada and for things like vacations. Not business though. That always was paid out in US$ and income was always in US$. When it hit the 30-40% range the difference was nearly none after higher cost of living and taxes. As I stated before in this thread after living in FL for nearly 5 years, I never noticed any real difference in buying power even though I was no longer getting that extra %. Why? Because my costs of living were much lower. Income in US dollars was fairly stable before/during/after the move.

But no matter what, Americans if the dollar continues to show weakness will start to understand higher cost of living on the same income and you'll see the bitching. Just look what the cost of fuel did in the country. Even now in the US I will pay .75 a liter vs the $1.10 I pay in Canada. As the price of oil soars due to the weak dollar the price of gas is going nowhere but up in the US. Unfortunately even though the Cdn dollar is getting stronger than the US $, the prices will also go up in Canada too because thats how we always get screwed.

You don't want to hear my point of view because it might be valid, you already have your mind made up and all you're going to do is find a way to make my point look wrong, whether it is or not.

I made statements based on simple math that you continue to ignore. 2+2 doesn't equal 5, (even in Canada) so no matter how many times you say I'm wrong, I'm still right.
