And why is it so difficult to understand that euros are not cheap ass, they simply are used to different tipping culture, they do not understand that stupid customary and thats wht they tip less, not that they are cheap ass.No, he took a job that was available for him where 90% of people tip as expected (read customary), the other 10% consisted of blacks, prom kids, fucking cheap ass euros and old farts will stiff them with shitty tip. The reason owners can pay waiters below minimum wage is because its CUSTOMARY in the US to tip 15%. Whats so difficult to understand?Comment

i have my 10 year anniversary this year of coming here and it got indeed a lot betteryes that is true. people have to pay 195czk and they say 200 and some still thinks they are the kings. but, we need to learn, still many people lived in communism so nobody teached them how to be nice and reward when you got a good service, they have learned how to save and think only about themself
but we are learning i hope

some restaurants have very good service nowadays and i am happy to leave a good tip when i go thereComment

That refill thing is really interesting. Why don't they do free refills for fries or onnion rings, but do that for drinks? They knew I was from the US. I can't remember where it was but i remember walking all day and stopping at burger king. So I order snack and drink and they give me this child meal cup with 3 sips in it. I downed that in 1 second and asked for some more. Kid gave me this look as if I was asking for his wallet.
They give you weird looks because refill thing is stupid - you get what you pay for. Its not normal that one person takes 1 cup and another person 3 cups for the same price, its just stupid.
Any world citizen would give you weird looks for asking that. Except for those who has been in the sates and saw this strange custom

This thread is full of really pwoor waiters. Most restaurants have "large party" fee on their menus. Its not to discourage but reward server for inconvenience of running multiple checks, endless refills and so on. You have no idea how difficult it is to make endless runs for refills, taking orders and answering questions all at the same time.Comment

Why do you care if they are poor or not? I knew this one old French guy who waited tables all his life. Came here on Queen marry or something. Always bitched how Americans can't serve tables, don't know anything about wines and shit, grumpy 50 year old man. Well, according to him he was making 150K in 80's at some super fancy place in NY, but that doesn't mean some kid at TGF makes 10% of that.

I'm not talking about poor money wise. But how some of you ex waiters really feel sorry for yourself that you had to work so hard at this amazing job of waiting tables and got paid so little you almost died of starvation. Why do you care if they are poor or not? Never did I say 'we" got paid so little. As matter of fact it paid for most of my college. The point is if I waiter gives good service, he's entitled to 15% on top of the bill. Now this is US so what ever the fuck you guys tip in Holland, you tip that in Holland. This is the US and waiters don't get paid shit per hour so their source of income is "your tip". Now if service was terrible, you talk to manager and he fixes things. What I dont get is some fuck telling you at the end his steak was overcooked, soda didn't have enough gas, salad was to greasy and so on.. That shit doesn't fly. Or some euro guy leaves you 2 dollar tip because thats how they do it in mother fucking Bavaria.
and just because you think they made enough for the day, doesn't give you right to take what supposed to be theirs.Last edited by Just Alex; 05-03-2012, 03:18 PM.

I'm not sure why you keep repeating this. Afaik there is not one person here from the EU who said he wouldn't tip enough on purpose while visiting the US. Basically any club/bar/stripclub/restaurant i've been to the waiters got ridiculous amounts of tips. That would easily be 5x what a waiter here would make getting paid per hour. It looks to me the tipping thing got totally out of control. And funny enough it's those waiter who cry the hardest and refuse to help people etc.
Very fucked up system/attitude.Last edited by Dirty F; 05-03-2012, 03:30 PM.Comment

supply and demand
It's the people at the bottom that determine how much they get paid. It's the workers that determine how things work.
The reason business owners are able to hire people for $2.13 an hour is because there's people who are willing to work for that much. If no one was willing to work for $2.13 an hour, the business owner wouldn't be able to hire anyone for $2.13 an hour. The fact that business owners continue to be able to hire people for $2.13 an hour (+the chance of getting a tip in this case) means that people are actually competing to get those jobs.Comment

That I have a problem with, especially bars. Paying $1 - $1.50 tip on $7 beer is too much. Especially if its 3.4% special beer and it takes 15 of those to get the a buzz.Basically any club/bar/stripclub/restaurant i've been to the waiters got ridiculous amounts of tips. Why do most people tip food servers but not the utility man (Cable TV/Internet/Phone) ? The utility man climbs up a pole and the food server just walks to the back room?Comment

When I worked for the phone company, then after I started doing it on my own, I had a few people tip me. Usually people from New York I noticed.Comment

If service was OK I do 15%, little extra effort with lids for kids drinks, extra dressing on the side - 20%. Really good service but not irritating bullshit about my favorite ball team or any other subject that will keep me talking to waiter for more than 2 minutes - 25%. Sometimes when I see mid-life crisis gal working at TGIF with kids to support, I'll give 30%.
I just feel bad for anyone over 30 doing this shitty job dealing with cheap asses, blacks and foreigners.

These conversations are always funny. The bottom tier of society always quick to chime in to tell everyone what they are entitled to and what everyone owes them.
Minimum wage for wait staff is $2.31/hr because people make up the balance in tips. Here's a life tip for you... you're not supposed to be relishing your job as a waiter in a crap restaurant. You're supposed to be using it as a temporary solution to move to something better, not making menial, no talent labor jobs a career. You're not supposed to be demanding more money for shoveling shit. You're supposed to be aspiring to something better.
And yeah... you go to a restaurant and eat by yourself and you aren't obligated to tip. You bring 10 friends and spend a $1000.00 that night and suddenly you're obligated to pay a nuisance tax because too many people are spending money in that restaurant. That's a joke and a situation I always avoid. I always tip until service is shitty, then it's $0.00 from me.Last edited by TheSquealer; 05-03-2012, 06:29 PM..

No, its because you want to have comfort of sitting all together, bullshit for 2 hours, be extremely obnoxious to other people sitting around you and most importantly run your waiter for you fucking refills as if he was your valet parking boy. On top of that every one of you motherfuckers want him to remember what kind of dressing you had on the side, explain every dish you want to change your mind about (while he's taking order from someone else), tell him some cool joke he's heard 10 times before and most importantly act as if you are the one picking up the bill. And at the end you bless him with "Hmmmmmm, can we have separate checks, please"...

This attitude is why I don't like going to restaurants. Too many servers think like this today. And then they want 15%, regardless of their service and attitude. No, its because you want to have comfort of sitting all together, bullshit for 2 hours, be extremely obnoxious to other people sitting around you and most importantly run your waiter for you fucking refills as if he was your valet parking boy. The whole situation is chicken and egg. Servers need to realize that people want good service. Some will pay, some will not. That's how it goes. But being a bad server will definitely not make you more money and it will not keep people coming back to your restaurant. There is absolutely no advantage to being a bad server, regardless of how terrible the customer is.
From the customer standpoint, they simply don't care. I am paying the restaurant money. I do not care what problems the server has today. I want to be treated well. I want good food. I want a cold drink. And I don't want to chase down my server so I can order another drink. If your restaurant does not give me what I want, I don't go back. There are plenty of other restaurants. Eventually I'll find one that knows how to give decent service. It's usually the small mom and pops.Vacares - Web Hosting, Domains, O365, Security & More - Paxum and BTC Accepted

Reminds me about a hotel stay in Dubai. My Chamber maid knocked on the door after I checked in. Over there maids are guys. He demanded a tip up front because he would not be on duty the day I check out. I told him I might leave a tip when I check out, but he wanted it, now. He got more aggressive. Hahaha.Comment

You are right. I do work in the service industry, of sorts. Sometimes I get burned, sometimes I make a killing. If I went into every situation thinking that I was going to get burned, I would get burned a hell of a lot more than I do right now.Dude, those kids have 5 to 7 tables like yours, and they all want their shit on the side, extra napkins, pen to write down you date's number etc. I tell you what, if you never worked that job, you will never understand it. I have plenty of examples where I have bent over backwards to help out affiliates, building them custom tools and landing pages and got nothing in return. No traffic at all. Other situations where I did the same bending over backwards and the affiliate turned into a whale that stayed with me for years. Sometimes you score, sometimes you get screwed.
That's what the service business is. It's good for some people, some it's not. It sounds like it's not for you.Vacares - Web Hosting, Domains, O365, Security & More - Paxum and BTC Accepted

Hang on...you keep screaming that paying a 15% tip is normal and people who don't are stupid.
But then you say: "Oh, I don't want to pay a $1 tip on a $7 beer", which is about 15%.
So what is it. Pay tip or pay no tip? I mean, I completely agree with you that it's rediculous to pay a tip on a beer but now you're just being inconsistent.
Also...saying you don't want to tip on a beer because the ABV is low is LUDICROUS. Get a different beer. Since when is the ABV relevant to how much you tip?

I don't think it can change from the bottom up because of the word "tips". It's used because there's a tax procedure for tips. You change it to something more accurate and unobjectionable and you make the employer have to withhold taxes. If they're going to do that, they may as well pay a higher base pay and we know that's not happening. Anyway, I object to the word "tip" or "gratuity" because that's not what it is.43-922-863 Shut up and play your guitar.

I should say it's not a tip or gratuity when it's being called mandatory of course. How some people don't understand that is just a mystery of the modern age. Make any fee you want part of the price for the customer, but it's not a fucking tip unless someone gave it to you unexpectedly. Make sense? Of course it does.43-922-863 Shut up and play your guitar.
