Thats sort of why they are building it anyways. Certain people and countries want an income after the oil either dries up or is no longer as needed.
If they can no longer be the crack dealer they will be the whore house. Sort of like Vegas.

Pretty impressive to actually see countrie's economies functioning and planning for the future like that.

Can't say that's something we're seeing here in the good 'ol USA.

Watching it now too, very interesting...

Didn't realize the labor issues were so bad. Should be interesting to see what happens in 5 years. Will there be more ghost towns in the middle of the ocean?

I give the dudes running Dubai credit: They are smart enough to see the end coming and are working to get past that, trying to turn the zone into a tourist destination AND a financial powerhouse. They are working hard to attract insurance, financial, and such to the country, including buying into stock exchanges.

They know that the oil gravy train is coming to an end, and they need to be something more or they will end up back as nomadic camel herders again.

My mother was there a week ago stopping off after 6 weeks in France & Italy...she said it was the most amazing, most luxurious place she'd been too. She also made mention she's never seen so much marble...the hotels, shopping centers and airport are just lined with miles of the stuff.
Would love to go there myself.

It'll have to be somewhat affordable if they want to keep all those hotels and big attractions packed with tourists. But if they become a hub for more large businesses, tourism will just be the icing on the cake. According to wikipedia, they've already made the transition from an oil-based dependent economy to a business economy. Oil revenue accounts for 3% of revenue there.

From a layperson's point of view, I can't wait to check it out.

ridiculous amounts of nightclubs, restaurants, etc. i have restaurant and club management experience that would translate nicely to that area. could easily mak 150k a year as a gm for a restaurant or nightclub there. many more things that could be done there as well. the glass is half full in dubai. you'd wanna get there before its all full.

Wonder why they have to import slave labor from India and Bangladesh and only pay them $5 a day.
Sure you got illegals in the US working for cheap, but $5 an hour sure is better than $5 a day.
