    My government wants us to pay VAT on our memberships... EU webmasters inside please.

    Being from Sweden, I'm used to fucked up tax policies, but this one is even more insane than usual.

    Got a letter today from the Swedish IRS. They've been looking into our biz for a few weeks now. According to them, we must pay VAT for all memberships sold to our paysites to european citizens.

    My question now is: Is there anyone here doing this? From any european country? Please help and respond either way.


    And, before you ask, of course we pay income tax on all money earned by the company. This is just the VAT I'm talking about here on the memberships to our sites, not sirtes we are affiliates to.

      We're in France and we're paying VAT on EU customers.
      US companies selling memberships to EU customers should also pay VAT to EU acording to EU laws. They don't have a way to enforce it outside EU so they focus on companies in their reach I guess.

                      Fuck... Our accountant had no idea about this, and neither did the Swedish IRS when I asked them a few years back.

                      I always thought this went under "services" and was excluded from VAT.

                          When you sell memberships to EU citizens you should pay VAT yes...That sucks ass. Means it will cost you 20% or so on your EU memberships.

                          Payserve for example pays me VAT too(which I have to pay myself to the tax as well tho)

                                                                                              Anna, there's a minimum turnover (omsättning) You have to reach before You have to register for, and collect, VAT... make sure to check that with SKV to begin with!

                                                                                              Unfortunately, it looks like You're in for the highest VAT we have in Sweden; 25%
                                                                                              (there are 3 levels I think, depending on what goods/services are sold; 6%, 12% and 25%).
