Only just heard of BALUT, a Southeast Asian dish. I'm generally up for trying absolutely anything. But for some reason this gave me pause. I think, after a little bit of thought, I'd give it a go - I bet it's delicious as long as you switch off the brain. But isn't it weird how the brain quibbles over the eating of an unhatched embryo when most of us are perfectly happy to chow on the adult form?
It's not even a matter of principal (for me, at least), it's just a deep instinctive response akin to revulsion at the sight/thought of a veiny, black-eyed little speck of life stapled to a yolk. There's probably a searingly insightful moral in amongst all this, but I'm fucked if I know what it is. Anyway: Balut. Would you?
