    Religious friend and porn

    So this guy on my facebook wrote about how life sucks and he has an alcohol and porn addiction.

    "Still struggling with alcoholism and pornography."
    As people wrote to him, he just seemed to be getting angry at them, lashing out a little at some.

    I tried to be comforting to his situation but I made the mistake of telling him it wasn't bad to watch porn because it is voluntary. I also mentioned a lot of people in the biz, shooters, pornstars and site owners live a good life that includes travel and money.

    Kind of encountered a thread backfire, here is what he responded with.

    "Thank you but that kind of thinking is what got me into this mess, my strength is crap, and so is yours. I am most sorry that my weakness would lead you to believe that God is not good. I made the mistake of forgetting who I am and not believing that Jesus alone is the source of joy and life and strength.
    "for what does it profit to gain the whole world but lose your soul?""


    One of his friends got to the thread and wrote this to me.

    "I know a large number of people in porn industry who have drug addictions, suicides & violent deaths - an ex porn star has a ministry for help on www.shelleylubben.com/"

    I did not realize how religious he and his friends were. He was once in a popular alternative band that did a few shows with Ozzy a while back. I am just going to drop it but was curious how some of you would respond to this.

    My initial intentions were to comfort a friend but now I feel odd about the whole thing lol.

      This is my view from where I sit. Not that is' the correct view but it's how I see it.

      The only people that believe in God are sheep and people that have hit ROCK bottom and look at the blank grins on the faces of the sheep and think "look how happy they are, I want to be happy to" as slobber rolls out of his mouth onto the floor.

      WTF these kind of people need slapped in the face and be told to grow some balls, be a fucking man, and Go change your kotex for fuck sakes...
      Bunch of whiney bitches... Facebook is FULL of people exactly like that. Which is most of the reason I HATE facebook.

                  It sounds like he has recognized he has a problem with porn and booze, so I'd support him in addressing his problem. I'll make my wife a margarita. I don't see alcohol as bad. At the same time, if _I_ had a margarita, I would have twelve, so I don't drink any. He may be the same - staying up all night whacking off and his wife is getting pissed.


                  As for his friends, it sounds like some of them would only push back harder if someone were to argue with them. To change their mind at all, one has to be very gentle and very slow. If you say anything to these people, ask a question that they won't be sure of the answer to. Something like "considering the biblical exhortation that a husband and wife should see to each others needs, might there be some situations where it would be good for a married couple who want to spice things up to watch an educational video?" Only once they decide that they are open to the idea of a couple watching porn to improve their marriage might they begin to consider taking that thought a step further.

                  God DID invent sex, they'll acknowledge, and the bible tells us to give our wives some dick when they need it. So if you're gentle you can slowly change attitudes, but leading with "porn is good" will only start an argument and they won't learn anything.

                              This guy was the drummer for a band that played in Ozzfest a while back. He did some shows with Ozzy, slipknot, etc in his hay day. I think that is why I when I got these type of responses, I was all...


                              I just didn't know how strongly he felt or that all his friends were on the same boat I guess. I knew where this was headed so I just politely implied it would be best if we both respect each others differences, to which his pastor friend replied:

                              That's cool Jason and I do respect your opinion too bro, and I'm good friends with ___ also. (Outside a religious view there is a lot of info on how porn is hurting relationships also - both in married couples and dating relationships).

                              I'm just gonna leave it at that lol.

                                  In truth there is no such thing as "porn addiction" that's just an attempt by largely the ignorant and the religious right ( i know the latter is inclusive of the former) to turn sex into some sort of medical condition.

                                  As someone who has overcome a REAL addiction it trivializes the often life threatening and very serious issues surrounding withdrawal from an addiction. It also harms our industry when we let people get away with that shit.

                                  Sex can be a compulsive behavior and/or an obsession but not an addiction.

                                  try kicking a real addiction and then tell me with a straight face that sex is an addiction.

                                      thank you for saying this. i think about this type of shit all the time when people bring up addictions like this. i agree and say that after having sat though 9 days of DTs from kicking daily alcohol.

                                                  I've had this conversation with people many times. Lately I just delete these kooks from my friends list. They're just simply too much trouble to have around, and I feel like I get stupider with every interaction I have with them.

                                                  Here's the thing that really blows my gord. They extrapolate their own problems to apply to everyone around them. They believe that if they have an addiction, then everyone must have the same problem. And they think that if the solution for THEM is religion, they think the solution for everyone must be religion.

                                                  And then they do things like this: I've heard of people in the porn industry that abuse people. You work in the porn industry, so you apparently abuse people. I've heard of porn industry people that use drugs, so you probably use drugs too. Someone at my church gave a sermon on how the porn industry draws in weak people for child trafficking. That must mean you engage in child trafficking.

                                                  And here's my favorite bible thumping agenda: I don't drink because alcohol is addicting. Therefore alcohol is evil, and anyone who drinks is also evil. Completely putting aside that alcohol itself has nothing to do with the problem. They are the problem. I'll have 2 shots on the rocks, please.

                                                  Basically they think that because they were a weak-minded person who had no way of coping with the stresses of day-to-day life... they think everyone must also be weak-minded, too.

                                                  And that's precisely why I can't stand religion or religious people.

                                                  Sometimes they kick back a reply that's something along the lines of "you must be living such an empty life, without having any faith." That makes me want to kick these assholes in the nuts! I reply with "I have quite a fulfilling life, believing in myself. I believe that belief in myself allows me to accomplish anything... here on earth. I don't have to sit and pray for the afterlife. Frankly I find that a more fulfilling experience than any religion has ever given me..."

                                                  And then they go on a ballistic tirade talking about how disgusting it is to only believe in yourself. I think most of them have serious mental problems.

Atheists, non-theists, anti-theists, agnostics, etc... are assumed to be a morally unstable psychopaths who are probably also rapists and murderers, or something equally absurd.

                                                                                                          A few months back, I decided to go to church. I have been to some wacky ones as a kid and I figured her, let me check this out again, maybe I will get into it.

                                                                                                          I get there and they hand us this schedule of what they talk about, I sit down wiht the gf and we wait. Whe they are ready, they proceed to play this post rock type of music for like half an hour. Everyone is standing up so I feel obliged to d the same. I am standing there stiff as fuck while evry one around me is rocking back and forth or slowly waving their hands around, etc.

                                                                                                          They stop and the guy starts basically yelling at his people for not giving them enough money. Not yelling but like bitching about it for like 15 or so minutes.

                                                                                                          The moment he started talking about the bible I feel right to sleep. The kinda heavy pamphlet fell out of my hands that made a smack on the tile which woke me up and had people staring at me.

                                                                                                          All in all it half of my time was spent feeling awkward and the other half sleeping.
                                                                                                          I can't understand how anyone like him can be so into it but to each their own I guess.

                                                                                                          When I saw how people were reacting to what I wrote I thought to myself 'These people would probably think of me as a religious psychopath' if that makes any sense lol. I just have no emotion either way about it and it would probably be very awkward if I hung out with them face to face.

                                                                                                                                  total waste of time, trying to engage devoutly religious people. Better to just stay away from the train wreck & watch from afar.

                                                                                                                                  but your friend should study more about addiction & see that addiction is an oddity whereby the most harmful aspects of the disease can be cured by willpower instead of medication. He finds the pain of his addictions is less painful then living without them. With dedication, time & social support, those pains subside.

                                                                                                                                  At least he can lean on an organized moral construct to provide that social support, unlike 12 step programs that encourage people to surrender to a god of their own choosing, a wishy washy, anything goes moral system.

                                                                                                                                                          Lets switch it up, instead of dealing with his core problems with alcohol / porn, he starts hoarding junk into his home and it gets so out of control that he becomes a showcase on that Hoarding TV show.

                                                                                                                                                          Would it make sense to start blaming everyone who creates that junk? If it's shoes, clothes, food, etc... They are on the same level as people that create porn products.

                                                                                                                                                          Why is it that porn peddlers are one of the only industries that get blamed directly?

                                                                                                                                                          I don't see ANYONE boycotting Jack Daniels in front of the liquor stores on behalf of alcoholics.
