i think about in terms of evolution and time

do we care about what the animals did in their lives that were our ancestors 200,000 years ago? Do the animals we watch in the wild today have a way of recording and telling future generations that we were watching them? no

people tend to think only in terms of what is possible NOW, not what might exist in the future. Aliens capable of coming here could be 1000's of years more technologically evolved then us,and if they didn't want us to know they were here or watching, we would not know.

in todays' technological terms, think of it like watching a monkey with a telescope from a blind, the monkey has no idea you're there or watching.

we could even use technology to mask smell, noise and blend into the background. no trace of our existence yet we are there watching, even altering things that happen to the monkey in his environment without any knowledge of the monkey, changing and molding the monkey's future
