              makers of phones dont want you to have total access over your phone. for example when the iphone came out you couldnt install apps, so the term "jail breaking" was coined by those who broke into it to install apps...

              rooting is basically equivalent of jailbreaking. you get access to the root of your phone which is the superuser

                              make sure you check to see if carrier IQ is installed on your phone. if so, google how to disable it.
