My only guess would be lack of Internet experience. Many of the current working generation only see the Internet as an alternative marketplace for existing "real world" ideas, and since the only real world counterpart of torrents, P2P content and so on is theft, many of the current working generation are only too happy to pay for porn.
I think this will change in the future, however, as many who have grown up with the Internet come of working age and refuse to pay a monthly subscription for content they've already taught themselves to find for free. -

Seriously though I think people pay for porn because they don't know how or where to get it for free. Ask the average surfer if he/she knows what a torrent is and I reckon it's doubtful they would know or even if they do like a lot of software it might be too "daunting" for them to use. Then there are the few who don't want to be arrested or sued. Silly people like that don't know how unlikely it is with so many people out there downloading porn for free.Coming soon

People will sign up if something really interests them. Plus, I like to promote tons of free sites, so people don't have to pay in order to join, and I still make $25 per sale on some of them. I've also seen that many people don't want to put a lot of thought into when and where they see porn. People that have money don't want to search through torrent sites & free sites with ads. They just want to log in, see the porn they want, jerk off, and go about their business. In reality, that's the ideal situation for me.Comment

You can get films, games, music etc for free too, but a LOT of people still pay for them (ok, you get the advantage of having a physical disk, but if you sign up you get the advantage of all the vids/photo sets in one place, web cam chats with sologirls etc). And it can often be quite al ot less than $1 a day, which isn't much at all really. spend more than that on a bottle of drink every dayComment

The porn industry would be out of business if people didn't pay for it.
$20-30 / month for an unlimited mega porn site isn't a whole lot of money for people who have jobs.
