Is piracy really affecting your bottom line that much? I thought porn was a multi-billion dollar a year industry. Besides that, the average US surfer that buys porn, probably couldn't tell you what a torrent even is.

I personally think you guys started a battle with the wrong kids.

Just wait till they find out that this piracy battle originated from the minds here at GFY & they start attacking every porn site here.

                        Good job guys.

Your comments might be valid today.. or maybe a couple years ago.. but the future is different and this type of movement needs to get started yesterday in order to build itself up for tomorrow.

The reality is that the torrent guys for the most part are smart enough NOT to get involved in things like DoS attacks, hacking, and the like. They understand that their entire lifeblood is sitting on the knife edge of legality, and the last thing they want to do is mix that up with hacking porn sites.

If their business model is valid and legal, there is nothing that anyone can do to stop them. If they business model isn't legal and is unsupportable, then they will have issues. Hacking sites or trying to disturb the internet would cross the line from social protest and move it right on to breaking the laws of just about every country in the world (including Sweden and Cyprus).

I just think they will be more agressive about posting porn torrents and trying harder to get more porn traffic.

To the hardcore, hacking is a sport, similar in a lot of ways to file-sharing. Sneaking around, grabbing information, hiding, running away, coming back, taking what you like and then saying.. :P :P They're not frightened, they're probably fucking with you and having fun, so it's the nature of the motivation that makes it worrying for you guys, they're laughing at you.

There are an estimated 30 million BitTorrent users in the world, and they aint all kids. Believe me, now that your plans have leaked to them, things won't be the same anymore. Google News 'Comcast' and see what happened to them when the torrent fans found out them meddling with their torrents recently. If you want an easily understood idea of the kind of backlash you can get when you target that type of demographic, check out what happened when the next-gen encryption keys leaked 09-f9-11-02-9d-74-e3-5b-d8-41-56-c5-63-56-88-c0 and someone tried to censor the information. blog.digg.com/?p=74

Largely thanks to Digg users (those nasty, pro-torrent people), type that key into Google and you get this on the first page: Results 1 - 10 of about 1,220,000 (zero before)

....you try and stop stuff, people get motivated....think about the mindset. It's NOT just about free media, try and tackle this a different way or you are going to lose.

There are roughly 30 million 'torrent guys' and you simply can't generalize in this way, there's too many of them! Ok, the guys that run the sites are more important than the 'other guys' but its called P2P for a reason, everyone plays an important part. You are dealing with a HUGE community so take care to think of the social elements to your 'battle' too.

Maybe, but like I said, they have millions upon millions of friends.

Yeah, when the status quo is maintained, things will run along at a sensible pace. Once you throw a spanner in, they get motivated. Think about the guy who uses 'Site X' and you shut it down and they jump on all the torrent forums and say "Site X is dead!! omfg!!! What shall I do??"

He gets a list of 10 other sites he never heard of before.

You simply cannot stop this so my suggestion is to make your own torrent sites with your own content, give it away and grab the advertising revenue that's dripping away before it's too late

There are any number of end users (pirate bay is after all a top 200 site on Alexa) but the actual number of torrent site owners is really frigging small, mostly because it is limited to people in jurisdictions that don't cooperate only copyright issues. The "friends" won't know or understand what is really going on, they are use to these sites going down and disappearing all the time, so they really won't be able to see a differnce at first, except that the sites won't come back up as quickly.

Realistically, few of us expect to "take down" torrent sites. I think that it is more about "get the porn off" and then they won't have to deal with us. The smart ones will pull the porn / block it / make it much harder to see and avoid the hassle.

The friends of torrent sites for the most part are also smart enough not to fuck with porn sites. There is no upside, no benefit. Hacking a pornsite won't get your name on CNN and won't get you any great coverage, and most porn people would have their sites re-established very quickly. Plus they would have to aim at some of the top sites to get any true exposure like a sex.com, xxx.com, etc.

Yeah, when the status quo is maintained, things will run along at a sensible pace. Once you throw a spanner in, they get motivated. The point right now is that the general public, the normal everyday people are getting to the big torrent sites and stealing porn instead of buying it. Make those sites harder to find, make it harder for the people to get the porn for free, and they will be back paying.

You simply cannot stop this so my suggestion is to make your own torrent sites with your own content, give it away and grab the advertising revenue that's dripping away before it's too late
The popular refrain of someone who runs a torrent sites, doesn't make any money producing content, and hasn't figured out that just giving the shit away endlessly will kill the buisness - plus guess what? Your bum buddies at places like AFF will start to pay you less and less for each signup until you are making nothing, and they are the ones making all the money, laughing their asses off to the bank while you take all the risks - and you left without a source for new content because the porn companies can't afford to produce it.

You aren't just biting the hand that feeds you, you are swallowing the whole arm. Your "grab what is left off the sinking ship" mentality is fucking idiotic and insanely short sighted. Your ideas are the last thing anyone around here needs.

First things first, I don't run a porn tracker. I was suggesting a way for you to make money now, I wasn't offering you a long-term business model.

You guys are experts in porn, I am not. I don't know anything about the porn industry, you guys would wipe the floor with me and I don't have a problem with that at all. However, i've read through all the piracy threads on this board and except for a couple of notable posts, they are mostly clueless. I've already had to put 'ServerGenius' straight on a number of facts and isn't he the one supposed to be running your anti-piracy strategy?

You guys are experts on porn but i've been dealing with piracy for more years than most of you guys have been having sex, so I think that gives me the upper hand here as far as 'advice' is concerned.

I'm not your enemy, so take it easy with the aggression, i'm a friendly guy

Your content isn't on the site. A file with links to people elsewhere who have 'your' content is the only thing there. This is your #1 problem. If the content was hosted and indexed on the site, you'd get them closed. Unless it's a company as big as Rapidshare, somehow the law doesn't apply to them....I wonder what their secret is? ;)

First of all, the domain name isn't necessarily registered to the person who owns the site, so the WHOIS can be quite useless.

Secondly, 'Hiding in the dark' just happens to be a very effective strategy to not being identified. If you can't be identified, then you can't be found. If you can't be found, you can't be threatened. If you can't be threatened then there's no incentive to stop.
